Atlas Malta is a purpose-built English language school in Pembroke, just outside St Julian's on Malta's east coast. It is the Maltese branch of Atlas Language School, an independent, privately owned English-teaching group that began in Dublin in 2003 and now also teaches in Liverpool and several summer centres. In Malta the school operates year-round and focuses on adult learners.
For a UK reader the attraction is straightforward: a modern boutique school with sea views, a short walk from one of Malta's busiest resort areas, and a flight of under four hours. The school sells courses on their own or as packages with a student apartment, so you can arrange lessons, a bed and an airport transfer in one booking. You can compare it with other schools in our directory of language schools in Malta.
The school and its setting
The building is new and designed for teaching, with ten bright classrooms, computer facilities, a study room, a common area and a fully fitted student cafe. Classes hold a maximum of fifteen students, and the average student age is twenty-six, so the atmosphere suits young professionals, university students and career-changers as much as holidaymakers.
Pembroke sits on the outskirts of St Julian's, a seaside town with a busy waterfront, restaurants and nightlife. The school is about fifteen minutes' walk from the St Julian's seafront, which makes it a convenient base for exploring the island. Atlas is certified by Malta's ELT Council and recognised for teaching excellence by IALC, an international association of language schools.
General and intensive English
The main course is General English, taught as twenty lessons a week of fifty minutes each, Monday to Friday. Morning lessons run from 9:00 to 12:50 with a break between the two blocks. Students are placed in a class by level after an online placement test, and the programme includes a certificate of completion and free afternoon elective classes.
Courses start throughout the year, with weekly rates falling as you stay longer. At the time of writing the Malta page lists course-only prices of €205 a week for one to eight weeks, €175 a week for nine to sixteen weeks and €160 a week for seventeen weeks or more, with a longer 24-week academic year course at €3,840. A summer supplement of €90 a week applies from 13 June to 6 September.
Anyone planning a long stay may want to read our guide to relocating to Malta, which covers the practical side of living on the island.
IELTS and exam preparation
Atlas teaches IELTS preparation in Malta as a Plus option: students take their morning General English lessons and add six lessons a week of small-group IELTS preparation in the afternoon. The afternoon classes run between about 1:30pm and 4pm, and the group is kept small so that each learner gets more time with an experienced exam teacher.
Erasmus+ teacher and staff training
In Malta the listed courses include AI and Digital Tools in Education, Innovative Approaches to Language Teaching, Language, Culture and Communication, and Erasmus+ General English Training, which runs every week. Individuals and small groups can join scheduled dates, while closed groups of at least seven people can request a course on any week. Participants can choose half-board homestay, self-catering or half-board residential accommodation, and excursions build cultural knowledge outside the classroom.
Student apartments and homestay
Atlas offers superior single and twin-room apartments within a short walk of the school, around fifteen to twenty minutes on foot. They are fully fitted, with free WiFi, air conditioning, fresh linen and towels, a washing machine, a shared kitchen and dining area and weekly cleaning, and each apartment has a safe. Check-in is on Sundays after 2pm and check-out is on Sundays before 10am, with places available all year round. Half-board homestay with vetted host families is the alternative.
The school's package for a General English course plus a shared twin room in a student apartment includes tuition, registration, the first course book, an arrival airport transfer, a placement test and a certificate. The Malta page currently lists this from €370 a week for seventeen weeks or more, €420 a week for nine to sixteen weeks and €460 a week for one to eight weeks, with a 24-week academic year package at €7,940. These offers are shown as valid for bookings until 31 December 2026, with courses starting any time in 2027.
Social life and exploring Malta
The school runs a social programme so new arrivals can meet classmates, and students often explore together at weekends. Typical outings in the school's photographs include Valletta, the fishing village of Marsaxlokk and the island's coastline. Our Valletta guide and things to do in Malta are useful for planning days out.
Free afternoons suit the beach: see our best beaches in Malta, and check the seasons in our Malta weather guide before choosing dates. Boat trips to the Blue Lagoon and a day on the island of Gozo are popular add-ons. UK students can compare routes in our flights to Malta guide, and a direct service runs from London Heathrow to Malta.
