Baron Car Hire is a Maltese vehicle rental business with an office at Triq Ġorġ Borg Olivier in St Julian's and further pick-up points in Buġibba, Valletta, Sliema and Gżira, and at Malta International Airport. It hires small cars, seven-seat vans, scooters and quad bikes by the day, with daily prices printed on its fleet list. Enquiries go to the business through the VisitMalta.co.uk form on this page.

Baron Car Hire is a vehicle rental business covering the north and east of Malta, from the Buġibba and St Paul's Bay resort area to Sliema, St Julian's and Valletta, with a desk at Malta International Airport for arrivals. It has traded for more than ten years and hires out cars, vans, scooters and quad bikes, so a UK visitor can match the vehicle to the trip: a small hatchback for a couple, a seven-seater for a family, or a scooter for short hops along the coast.

You can compare other providers in our directory of car hire in Malta before you decide.

Cars, vans, scooters and quads

The car range starts with small manual cars. The Nissan Micra is listed from €32 a day, while the Hyundai i20, Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10, Citroën C1 and Peugeot 108 are €35 a day. The Citroën C3 and the automatic Citroën C1 cost €40, the automatic Hyundai i10 and the Toyota Yaris hybrid automatic are €45 a day, the Kia Stonic is €50 and the larger Peugeot 308 is €65. Cars are of 2019 to 2024 registration, with the model shown as the car or similar, so the exact vehicle can vary.

For groups there are seven-seat vans: the Peugeot Tipee and Nissan NV200 at €75 and €80 a day, the Dacia Jogger at €80 and a Ford seven-seater at €85. Scooters are €25 a day, including 125cc Kymco models and a 50cc machine. Quad bikes are €80 a day for the Kymco 450cc, €100 for the MXU 250cc and €105 for the MXU 520cc. A 20 minute jet ski rental is also listed at €55.

Free cancellation is offered up to 48 hours before pick-up. Some listings state that the price includes collision damage waiver, tolls, theft protection, liability cover, local taxes and no credit card fees, so confirm what your chosen vehicle includes when you enquire.

Where to collect your vehicle

Baron Car Hire works from several points. In the north, the office is in Buġibba on L-Alka, close to the hotels covered in our guide to hotels in Qawra and St Paul's Bay. In Valletta, it is on Old Bakery Street, and our Valletta guide helps you plan the day around the capital. There is also an office in Sliema and Gżira, and the Sliema hotels guide lists places to stay nearby.

At the airport the team meets you outside the arrivals area, and the return process is explained at pick-up. If you are still arranging flights, see our page on flights to Malta. Offices are open every day from 9am to 6pm, and if nobody is in when you return, you can drop the key in the mailbox and send photos of the vehicle and key.

Rules, deposits and insurance

You must be 21 or over to hire any vehicle in Malta. A security deposit is taken as a pre-authorisation on your card: the amount is blocked, not charged, and stays pending for 18 to 20 working days to cover fines such as speeding or parking tickets that may arrive by post. Standard insurance carries a €500 excess, and you can reduce the deposit to €150 by paying €15 a day for extra insurance. Cash deposits are not accepted, only debit and credit cards.

Return the vehicle with the same fuel level it had at pick-up, and the first quarter of a tank is free. Drivers are responsible for fines and an administration fee is added. In Malta, white lines mean free parking, yellow or double yellow lines mean no parking, and blue lines are for disabled drivers. Two helmets come with every scooter or quad bike, and 50cc scooters carry one rider only.

Other services and getting started

Beyond daily rentals, the business offers chauffeur hire, car sharing options, corporate rental solutions, long-term rentals and a help centre available around the clock, with roadside assistance if you have engine trouble. Once you have your vehicle, our guides to things to do in Malta, Golden Bay and the Blue Grotto suggest places to drive to.

To ask about availability, a vehicle or a pick-up point, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message to Baron Car Hire.

Questions about Baron Car Hire

Where does Baron Car Hire collect and drop off vehicles?

Pick-up points are in Buġibba and St Paul's Bay, Valletta, Sliema and Gżira, St Julian's and Malta International Airport, where the team meets you outside arrivals. Drop-off locations are St Julian's, St Paul's Bay and the airport, so confirm yours when you enquire.

How much does a small car cost per day?

Small manual cars start at €32 a day for the Nissan Micra, and several models such as the Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto and Citroën C1 are €35. Automatics start at €40 a day. Prices are per day, so check what your quote includes.

What is the minimum age to hire a vehicle?

You must be 21 or over to rent any vehicle under Maltese rules. Bring a debit or credit card for the security deposit, because cash deposits are not accepted and the deposit is blocked on your card temporarily.

How much is the security deposit and excess?

Standard insurance has a €500 excess, taken as a pre-authorisation on your card. Paying €15 a day for extra insurance reduces the deposit to €150. The amount stays pending for 18 to 20 working days to cover any fines.

Can I cancel a booking?

Yes. The fleet list shows free cancellation up to 48 hours before the pick-up time. After that point, ask the team what applies when you enquire, because later cancellations are not described.

Do you provide helmets with scooters and quad bikes?

Yes, two helmets come with every scooter or quad bike rental. The 50cc scooters are for one person only and passengers are not allowed, so choose a 125cc model if you plan to ride with someone.

Is there help if something goes wrong on the road?

Yes. A helpline runs 24 hours a day, and the team will assist wherever you are if you have engine trouble or another problem. Offices themselves are open daily from 9am to 6pm.

How do I book Baron Car Hire from the UK?

Send your dates, pick-up point and preferred vehicle through the enquiry form on this VisitMalta.co.uk page and we will pass your message to Baron Car Hire, who will reply to you directly.
