Bezz Diving is an independent SSI dive centre in Mellieħa, at the northern end of Malta. Guided groups never exceed four divers, and the team picks each site to suit the sea conditions that day, your level of training and the sort of dive you are after. Out of Mellieħa the centre visits Malta, Gozo and Comino, with reefs, caves, walls and a strong choice of wrecks.

Complete beginners, divers coming back after a break and experienced divers chasing deeper wrecks are all catered for, whether you want one dive, a course or a few days in the water. Our guide to dive centres in Malta lists other operators if you would like to compare.

The centre and its team

The centre was founded in 2012 by Mark "Bezz" Bezzina and earned a name for a friendly feel and personal attention. James and Sol became its new owners in September 2026 and want to build on his work.

James Cowie owns the centre and is a Divemaster with a taste for deep, night and drift dives. Reese Braden is the Director of Diving, Ryan Cowie the Lead Dive Instructor and Sol Cowie the Customer Manager. English is spoken throughout, and Sol also speaks German.

Courses and prices

Teaching follows the SSI system, from first steps up to specialities such as Deep, Wreck, Navigation, Perfect Buoyancy and Enriched Air Nitrox. Prices start at these levels: Try Scuba, a 2 to 3 hour course, is from €70; the Basic Diver course, 4 to 5 hours, from €120; and the 3 day Open Water Diver course from €530.

For certified divers, the 3 day Advanced Open Water Diver course with an extra fun dive is from €490, and the Stress and Rescue course from €475. Speciality options include Enriched Air Nitrox (40 per cent), a 2 hour course from €130, Wreck Diving, a 1 day course from €260, and Deep Diving, over 2 days, from €370. Packages combine courses, such as Wreck Diving with Deep Diving for 2 days from €425, or a 4 Specialities Bundle over 3 days from €575.

Beginners and first dives

A try dive suits people who have never dived, and asks only for reasonable general health. Nobody needs to be a strong swimmer, since an instructor stays at your side and no swimming is involved. Certification courses add an easy swim test of about 200 metres in any stroke with no time limit, then 10 minutes floating or treading water.

Children can usually try diving in a pool from about 8 years old, and junior certification typically begins at 10; the team will confirm what suits each age. Every diver completes a medical questionnaire, and conditions like asthma, heart problems or epilepsy need a doctor's clearance first. Leave at least 24 hours between your final dive and any flight.

Mellieħa and what to bring

Pack swimwear, a towel, reef safe sunscreen, flip flops, your certification card if you hold one and travel sickness tablets if boats upset you. Dive equipment is normally supplied, and the team will confirm what comes with your booking. Dive insurance is recommended.

Rain on the surface does not affect a dive, and trips are cancelled only in truly unsafe conditions such as storms or very rough seas, always at the team's discretion. Our Malta weather guide shows what to expect month by month. Plenty of visitors base themselves nearby, and our Mellieħa guide and list of hotels in Mellieħa will help, while the Blue Lagoon guide covers Comino.

Booking ahead is wise in busy periods, because courses and trips can fill up and very late or same day requests cannot always be guaranteed. To ask about a course, a try dive or a package of dives, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message to Bezz Diving.

Questions about Bezz Diving

Where is Bezz Diving based?

Bezz Diving is at Sandy Waters Court on Marfa Road in Mellieħa, in the north of Malta. From there the team dives sites around Malta, Gozo and Comino, and it is open Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 15:00.

How big are the diving groups?

No guided group is larger than four divers, which keeps the pace relaxed. Sites are chosen on the day to suit the sea, your training and what you hope to see underwater.

Do I need experience to try scuba diving?

No. A try dive is made for people who have never dived and needs no certificate, only reasonable general health. An instructor stays next to you the whole time and you set your own pace.

How much do the courses cost?

Try Scuba starts from €70, the Basic Diver course from €120 and the 3 day Open Water Diver course from €530. Other courses and packages are priced from €130 up to €595.

How soon can I fly after diving?

A gap of at least 24 hours is required between your last dive and a flight. The rule has no exceptions because it guards against decompression sickness, so schedule your final dive well ahead of your trip home.

What should I bring and is equipment provided?

Take swimwear, a towel, reef safe sunscreen, flip flops and your certification card if you have one. The scuba kit is usually provided, and the team will say exactly what your dive or course covers.
