Blue Hole Diving Gozo is a small, owner-run dive centre in Marsalforn, a seaside town on the north coast of Gozo. It offers guided dives to the island's caves, arches and wrecks, first-time scuba experiences and a full ladder of SSI courses, and welcomes divers certified with any agency.
The centre dives in warm, clear Mediterranean water, with sites on both Gozo and Malta. If you are planning a holiday with diving in it, this page explains what the centre offers, what things cost and how to get in touch.
Who runs the centre
The centre was founded by a couple who visited Gozo from Poland for years to dive and relax and eventually decided to settle there. They made their home in Marsalforn, within walking distance of several dive sites, and opened Blue Hole Diving Gozo to share the island with other divers. The business is owned by Mariola Karkusiewicz, an economist by training who manages marketing and day-to-day operations and helps guests with travel arrangements, accommodation and ideas for their free time. Wojtek Karkusiewicz is an SSI diving instructor who has dived since the 1980s and is a respected underwater photographer.
Safety, building skills and caring for the marine environment come first at the centre. It promotes the buddy system, teaches courses at every level and educates divers about underwater nature. Some media articles mention the centre under its earlier name, Diveworld Gozo.
The office is air conditioned and relaxed, and the equipment is new and well maintained for recreational and technical diving. Two comfortable cars take divers to sites in every part of the island. Our Gozo guide covers the island above the water, and hotels in Gozo lists places to stay.
Dive sites you can visit
The centre dives sixteen sites around Gozo, Malta and Comino. Caves and swim-throughs include Billinghurst Cave, Cathedral Cave, Santa Maria Caves and Shrimp Cave. Natural features include the Blue Hole, the Double Arch, the Inland Sea, Mgarr ix-Xini, the Middle Finger and Xwejni Bay. Wrecks include MT Hephaestus, MV Cominoland, MV Karwela, MV Xlendi and the patrol boats P29 and P31.
Ask the team which sites suit your level and the season. If you want to see where Comino fits into the picture, our Blue Lagoon guide describes the island above the surface, and the Malta weather guide helps you pick a month.
Guided dives and prices for certified divers
Certified divers can book dive packages. Each day's price covers transfers from the centre to the dive site and back, two 12 litre steel cylinders of air, weights, a dive guide and drinking water.
Shore diving in Gozo costs €100 for one dive day with two dives, or €120 with equipment rental. Three dive days cost €225, or €285 with rental, and five dive days cost €340, or €440 with rental. Each extra day after that is €68, or €88 with rental. A dive day in Malta, with two shore dives, is €120, or €140 with rental. Boat diving costs €140 for a day of two dives, or €160 with rental, and the boat goes out when at least six people have booked.
A single night dive from shore is €70, or €90 with equipment, and a deco dive on the MT Hephaestus wreck is €130, or €150 with equipment. The deco dive is only for divers whose skills the centre has checked, and it includes air or enriched air for a twinset or sidemount plus EAN50 for decompression.
First dives: Try Scuba and Basic Diver
You do not need to be certified to dive with the centre. Two introductory programmes suit beginners and families. Try Scuba takes three to four hours for groups of up to three people, from the age of 8, and includes a short briefing and one shallow dive of 30 to 40 minutes to a maximum of 5 metres. It costs €60.
Basic Diver takes four to five hours for groups of up to two people, from the age of 10, and includes learning basic skills in shallow water followed by two dives to a maximum of 12 metres, each lasting 30 to 40 minutes. It costs €140 and can count as the first lesson of the Open Water Diver certification. Both programmes include equipment, a digital recognition card, an instructor, transport from the centre to the dive site and insurance, and souvenir photos are an optional extra at €20.
Children aged 8 and 9 can dive only to 5 metres. Everyone completes a medical questionnaire before diving, and you should feel comfortable in the water. Families travelling with children can ask about group size and timing when they enquire.
SSI courses from beginner to advanced
The Open Water Diver course is the entry level certification that lets you dive with a buddy to 18 metres. It costs €600, including the digital manual and certificate, classes with an instructor, equipment rental, transport to dive sites and insurance, and it usually takes three to four days. The minimum age is 10. You need to be able to swim 200 metres without aids, or 300 metres with mask, snorkel and fins, and to float or tread water for 10 minutes.
Certified divers can take the Advanced Open Water Diver course at €370, or €400 with equipment, which includes five adventure dives and raises your depth limit to 30 metres. The Deep Diving course at €280, or €310 with equipment, covers planning no-decompression dives to 40 metres. The Enriched Air Nitrox course costs €130, and you receive a free tank of nitrox if you have booked a dive package. Perfect Buoyancy is €280, or €310 with equipment, and Scuba Skills Update, a refresher course with full equipment, is €140.
Because courses are modular, work you do with the centre counts if you finish elsewhere. The centre teaches with SSI and welcomes divers certified by PADI, CMAS and other agencies.
Safety, equipment and practical points
Diving at the centre follows international safety standards and the buddy system, and certification requires you to dive with an equally or higher certified buddy rather than alone. The equipment is regularly serviced, and the centre offers rental of everything you need for a small fee on courses where it is not already included.
If you wear glasses, you cannot dive in them, but a prescription mask is available from dive shops, and many divers use soft contact lenses instead. Every participant fills in a medical questionnaire before diving, and in some cases a doctor's opinion is needed first. Please read the form carefully and ask the centre if you have questions.
An SSI certificate is recognised at dive centres worldwide, so you can carry on diving at home or on later holidays. If you cannot finish a course in one trip, the missing modules can be completed at another centre, though the Open Water Diver programme usually has a time limit of six to twelve months.
Underwater photography and planning your stay
Underwater photography is a passion for the team, and the centre's gallery shows images from Gozo and Malta. Souvenir photos can be added to the introductory programmes for €20.
Mariola can help with travel arrangements and accommodation and will suggest what to see in your free time, which is useful if this is your first trip to Gozo. Ask the centre about the best place to base yourself.
