An academy with a clear purpose

The academy opened in 2021 and is the only officially registered bowling academy on the Maltese Islands. Its aim is a welcoming community for bowlers of every age, gender and background, from youngsters heading for European championships to experienced players refining their technique. Coaching follows the RSCP method, and the team uses tools such as The Illuminator, video analysis and a performance dashboard.

Rick Vogelesang, born in The Hague, founded the academy and serves as head coach. He holds MOC, USBC, SO and EBF certifications and is the only coach in Malta with a USBC Silver certificate. Sue Abela is a master teaching professional and youth programme director with more than 30 years of experience. Osku Palermaa, a two-handed bowler who has competed on the European, World and PBA tours, joins as lane play strategist for 10PinCam sessions.

Lessons and programmes

Beginner's Blueprint is a five-week foundation programme covering stance, approach, release and basic scoring, with certified instructors and advice on choosing equipment. Intermediate Mastery runs for eight weeks and works on technique, lane play, spare shooting and lane adjustments, with video analysis and drills. Pro Performance is for competitive bowlers and consists of tailored one-to-one sessions on mental game, ball motion and tournament preparation.

When you request a session you choose a coach, a date and a start time between 9:00 and 17:00, and a length of one hour, an hour and a half or two hours, and you say whether you are a beginner, intermediate or elite bowler. The academy also launched a Learn-To-Bowl after-school programme in November 2024 to introduce children to the sport. Members of all ages are accepted, from school year 11 and below up to adults aged 18 and over.

The pro shop and equipment

The pro shop sits outside the main Eden complex and operates on a prepaid, appointment-only basis, sourcing kit from brands such as Brunswick. Its software produces live 3D layouts so you can see the geometry of your ball before any drilling begins, and there is a bar, free wifi, a darts area and a pool table to enjoy while you wait.

Printed prices include blank reactive drilling at €50, blank plastic drilling at €40, two-handed or no-thumb drilling at €30 and a custom hand measurement at €25. Finger grips cost €10 a set and thumb slugs €15 each. Ball care includes cleaning at €10, polishing at €10, a full resurface at €30 and oil extraction at €25. Custom sublimated team jerseys are €49.50 each for one to three shirts and €39.50 each for four or more. Members receive discounts on pre-ordered equipment and services, under a structure that combines a one-time core fee with annual section fees.
