Change Easily is a hypnotherapy practice founded by Carlotta Bernardo, a registered psychologist and certified hypnotherapist. It serves two bases, London and Malta, and runs online sessions too, which makes it unusually convenient for British clients who spend part of the year on the island or who are thinking about a move. In Malta she sees people in person for one week each month, and the practice is listed in the San Pawl il-Baħar (St Paul's Bay) area on the north-east coast.
Her method brings together hypnotherapy, NLP (neuro-linguistic programming, a set of communication and thinking techniques), breathing work and psychotherapy, with the aim of helping people change long-standing patterns in a small number of sessions. Change Easily is part of our directory of psychologists in Malta, and this page sets out what is on offer, where she works and how to arrange a first conversation.
Carlotta Bernardo's background
Carlotta graduated with a BSc in Child Psychology from the Carlo Bo University of Urbino in Italy in 2011. She then spent time in Vancouver attending self-improvement seminars before moving to London in 2012, where she completed a counselling certificate and an MSc in Mental Health and Psychological Therapies at Queen Mary University of London. During those years she worked at Newham Centre for Mental Health, using approaches such as dance movement psychotherapy and drama therapy.
What links these stages is a belief that change does not have to be hard. The approach is warm and encouraging, and clients are invited to take a small first step by booking the free consultation. The focus throughout is on a person's inner resources rather than on diagnosis or labels, so people who want to feel calmer, more confident and less pressured to be in control at all times are the natural audience.
Working in a mental health setting led her to hypnotherapy and to the Change Easily method, which combines hypnotherapy, NLP, talk therapy, the CONTROL System and now IEMT. She lived in Malta for several years until the summer of 2025 and during that time featured on a television programme and in newspapers. Her listed qualifications include MSc Psy, DipHyp, SQHP and BCH NGH, and she is a CONTROL practitioner.
She is a member of several professional bodies: the General Hypnotherapy Register, the National Hypnotherapy Society, the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council, the National Guild of Hypnotists in the United States, the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council, the Control System Academy and the Association for IEMT practitioners. She is also registered as a smoking cessation specialist with the Central Register of Stop Smoking Therapists. Carlotta is Italian, and her website is available in English and Italian.
What hypnotherapy involves
Many people picture a swinging pendulum or a stage show, but hypnosis is better understood as a natural state of focused attention and deep relaxation, like being absorbed in a book or a long drive. You stay aware throughout, can hear what is happening, and remain in control. Nobody can be made to do something against their will, and nobody gets stuck in the state.
Sessions combine visualisation, guided relaxation, NLP and specific hypnosis techniques with conversation. As well as talking about your situation, as you would in psychotherapy, you work at a physical, emotional and mental level. Hypnotherapy needs your active participation, and it is not a magic wand. Clients may be sent a relaxation recording by email afterwards to practise at home.
Hypnotherapy is not recommended for people with severe mental health conditions or those on strong medication, so mention any health concerns when you enquire. It is a talking and relaxation approach and nothing on this page is medical advice.
Hypnotherapy differs from a conventional talking therapy because you do not only describe your situation: guided relaxation lets you work with the subconscious mind, where habitual emotional responses and old patterns sit. When mental chatter quietens, the aim is to neutralise negative thoughts, feelings and behaviours stored since childhood and to build a more active, confident attitude to life. The method is meant to be gentle, and the pace is agreed between you and the therapist.
Issues the practice works with
The practice helps with anxiety and panic attacks, stress and worries, low self-esteem and low confidence, trauma-led behaviours, fears and phobias, sleep problems, motivation and concentration, and fear of public speaking. Exam anxiety and goal setting are also covered, along with creativity and what the practice calls inner power.
Anxiety work focuses on practical techniques to bring calm and a sense of control. Trauma work takes place in a supportive setting and aims to release emotional burdens gently. For fears and phobias, such as heights, public speaking or social situations, the aim is to build confidence so that limiting anxieties stop holding you back.
If you are going through a big change, for example after reading about relocating to Malta from the UK or planning a stretch of remote working from Malta, it can help to have a therapist who works both in London and on the island and who can continue online if your plans shift.
Combining a session with a break is easy in the north of the island: the coast around Golden Bay and the ferry to the sister island of Gozo are within reach for a spare afternoon.
Stopping smoking and hypnobirthing
Stopping smoking is approached as a matter of changing the beliefs and emotional patterns that keep the habit in place, such as stress relief, routine and identity, rather than fighting cravings. A longer session of 75 to 90 minutes is available for this purpose, with the fee discussed in the initial consultation.
Hypnobirthing prepares expectant mothers for birth with breathwork, visualisation and guided relaxation, to build calm and confidence. It is a complement to, not a substitute for, your antenatal care, and questions about your pregnancy are for your midwife or doctor.
IEMT, heart coherence and meditation
Beyond hypnotherapy the practice offers IEMT therapy, which is part of the integrated method, heart coherence and meditation. Heart coherence is a state in which heart rhythm, mind and emotions are in balance, cultivated through specific breathing, visualisations and heartbeat connection. Meditation sessions guide you into calm awareness through breath, stillness and gentle focus.
Self-hypnosis is also taught, so that you can reinforce changes between sessions. Clients who have started in person in London or Malta can move to online sessions when they travel or relocate, which keeps the work consistent.
Sessions, timings and costs
A free 15-minute discovery call is available if you are unsure whether hypnotherapy suits you. The first introductory session lasts about 60 minutes. You learn how the method works, talk about your background and goals, ask questions and try a short guided relaxation. Later sessions last around 50 to 70 minutes depending on the technique.
The number of sessions depends on your goals, situation and commitment. Some people notice a difference after one or two sessions and others after three or four, and a minimum of four is usually recommended to reinforce change. Fees vary with the person's issue and severity, and pricing and booking links reflect your location and currency. You receive full details before you confirm, and all sessions are prepaid online to reserve the time slot.
Where to meet in Malta and London
In Malta, in-person sessions run for one week each month, with dates confirmed when you enquire. If you are visiting, check flights to Malta and the London Heathrow to Malta route, and look at the Malta weather guide when choosing your dates. The north-east coast around St Paul's Bay is handy for the best beaches in Malta and wider things to do in Malta.
In London, Carlotta sees clients on Tuesdays or Thursdays at her Leyton practice, and on selected days at central locations arranged according to client requests. Online sessions run weekly and suit international clients across Europe and beyond.
