Driving Theory Malta Online, trading as Theory Test Malta, is an online practice system for the Maltese car and motorcycle theory test, listed in our driving schools directory under Safi. It uses the same question bank as Transport Malta and lets learners practise on any device. Enquiries go through the VisitMalta.co.uk form on this page.

Theory Test Malta is a web app built to prepare you for the first step towards a Maltese driving licence. It offers online practice for both the car and the motorcycle theory test, with the aim of helping learners pass at the first attempt and avoid paying for a re-sit. It is not a driving school with cars and instructors, but it sits naturally alongside lessons, and it is listed in our directory of driving schools in Malta.

For UK residents settling on the island, the theory test is a necessary hurdle for anyone who has to sit for a Maltese licence rather than exchange one, so our guide to relocating to Malta is a useful companion to this page.

Two kinds of online test

The All Questions test works through the whole question bank, which holds 444 questions for cars and 391 for motorcycles. There is no time limit, you get two tries with one payment, and the access window is 30 days. Doing about 40 questions a day would get you through everything in roughly ten days.

The Actual Test copies the official format, with a 45 minute limit and questions drawn at random from the same bank. One payment gives five attempts within a 15 day window. The questions are the same ones provided by Transport Malta, so practice here mirrors what you will meet in the test centre.

You create an account with an email and password, can start on one device and finish on another, and can pause and return later, with the system picking up where you left off. This flexibility does not apply to the official test.

What the official test involves

The official theory test is run by Transport Malta, and only Transport Malta can issue the certificate, so practising online does not give you a certificate. The minimum age is 18. The test has 35 multiple choice questions on a touch screen, a 45 minute limit and a pass mark of 85%, which means at least 30 correct answers. The fee is €30.25, and a re-sit costs €22.25 if you keep your receipt from the first attempt.

Appointments are usually given for the following working day. Take your ID card, and if you pass you receive two identical certificates: one to keep and one to give your instructor when applying for the practical test. The certificate does not currently expire, but check with Transport Malta because rules can change. The Road Code can be downloaded in English and in Maltese.

Preparing well

Read each question carefully, because the wording can mislead, and check how many answers the question asks for: if a question wants two answers and you give one, you score nothing for it. You can go back and review your answers before finishing. The aim is real understanding of the road rules for your own safety and that of others, not simply passing by luck, so working through every question in the All Questions test is the better route than relying on a few Actual Test attempts. Learners who then move on to lessons will find the theory fresh when the practical test approaches.

Other help for drivers

The website also carries maps of service stations and public conveniences across Malta and Gozo, ideas for touring Sicily by car or motorcycle, and articles on road safety. If you plan to drive during a holiday, our guides to things to do in Malta, the Gozo guide and the Valletta guide suggest where to go, and the Malta weather guide helps you choose when. Flights to Malta and where to stay in Malta cover the rest of the trip, and our about Malta guide gives an overview.
