Try diving and learning to dive

Beginners have two entry points. A try dive or PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) introduces you to the sport with no previous experience or certification, so you can find out whether you like it without committing to a full course. All the equipment you need is provided and included in the price for beginners.

The next step is the PADI Open Water course, the qualification that lets you dive around the world. To take it you need to be able to swim 200 metres and float or tread water for 10 minutes. Courses last from one to 15 days depending on the programme, and your certification arrives digitally as soon as you finish.

Courses for certified divers

For divers who hold Open Water or an equivalent, the Adventure course reaches 30 metres and takes you to Malta's wrecks, with three adventure dives of your choice that can be completed in one day. Adventure plus Deep extends the limit to 40 metres within recreational limits, and there is an Advanced course for those who want to keep progressing.

Specialty courses include Deep diving, covering air consumption and dive planning, wreck diving, nitrox, buoyancy, night diving and Emergency First Response. The school also teaches the Rescue course and professional training, namely Divemaster and the PADI Instructor Development Course. Experienced divers can hire professional equipment such as dive computers and torches, which is handy if you have flown in with only your mask and fins.

Dive sites and group packages

Sites visited across Malta, Gozo and Comino include both sides of Ċirkewwa, where the wrecks Rozi and P-29 sit in a protected marine park and are good for beginners, the Imperial Eagle, Tug 2 Exile, Maori, the St Michel and Tug 10 pair, and the UM Faroud off Żurrieq, a challenge for advanced divers. At Comino there is the P-31 wreck and the Santa Maria Caves, and in Gozo the Blue Hole and the Inland Sea, whose tunnel leads out to open water. Our Mellieħa guide covers the area near Ċirkewwa, and the Gozo guide and Blue Lagoon guide help with the islands.

Certified groups can book dive packages that range from wreck routes to scooter (DPV) trips. Whether you are a visitor or live on the island, the school runs lessons and packages for beginners and experts alike, so the sea stays within reach in any season. Local residents can also join the school's group of local divers for special prices and offers.

Planning your dives

The school leaves 24 hours between your last dive and any flight, and recommends waiting a minimum of 12 to 24 hours depending on the dives you have done. UK visitors can check flights to Malta and the Malta weather guide when picking dates, and non-diving days could go on things to do in Malta. Nearby you will also find Abyss Diving Club Bugibba, and Amazing Boat Trips Malta for a day on the water. For a base, see hotels in Qawra and St Paul's Bay.

To book a try dive, a course or a package, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message to DS Divers Malta.
