Gran Castello Historic House is a Heritage Malta museum inside the Citadel in Victoria, Gozo, set in a cluster of interlinked houses on Triq Bernardo DeOpuo. It shows domestic, rural and working life through period rooms, a beast-driven mill and weaving tools. Questions and guided tour requests can go through the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page.

Gran Castello Historic House sits behind the thick walls of the Citadel in Victoria, the capital of Gozo, and walking in feels like stepping back about three centuries. It is a cluster of interconnected houses in Bernardo De Opuo Street, run by Heritage Malta, the national agency for museums and cultural heritage.

For UK visitors, it is a compact, absorbing stop that pairs well with a wander around the Citadel. You see how a well-off Gozitan household lived and worked, from the kitchen and the children's room to the mill, rather than a gallery of labelled objects behind glass. Allow time for the garden at the end, and for the narrow lanes outside, which are part of the atmosphere.

The houses and their history

The buildings show Sicilian and Catalan influences and a familiarity with a sophisticated Late Gothic style. Their fine quality suggests that they may have belonged to wealthy families. Over the years there were various owners, who owned and rented out different sections, and for a period the houses may have worked as a single unit. In 1983 they were rehabilitated as a museum.

The museum still hosts exhibits on local domestic, rural and traditional ways of life, and the site is gradually being reworked to reflect the home life of an eighteenth-century town. Because the Citadel is the old fortified heart of Gozo, the visit sits naturally within our Gozo guide.

What you will see inside

In the southern house, the ground floor and mezzanine hold a reconstructed historic home with working and living spaces for the serving staff. The central house is devoted largely to rural trades and skills, mainly farming, and its large mill room is dominated by a spectacular beast-driven mill.

The first floor was once the living quarters of the resident wealthy families. It displays period furniture and items linked to local domestic crafts, especially weaving, including a cotton gin and a spinning wheel. The rooms covered across the house include a kitchen, bedrooms, dining rooms, storage rooms, a mill room, a study or leisure room, a children's room, a washroom and a room for domestic work such as weaving.

Weaving demonstrations and the audio-visual show

Every Wednesday from July to September, between 11am and 1pm, an expert weaver demonstrates the traditional technique using authentic tools and methods that go back several hundred years. The demonstrations are included in the museum ticket, so there is nothing extra to pay. It is worth checking the Heritage Malta opening hours first, then planning your morning around the Wednesday slot if you are visiting in summer.

An audio-visual presentation also explains the late medieval layout of the house cluster within its urban setting at the time. At the end of the visit you are invited to relax in the garden, which has an indoor and outdoor seating area.
