LA Rentals Malta is a vehicle hire company with its main office in Sliema and a second base close to the airport. It rents 50cc and 125cc scooters, small cars and a 400cc motorbike, so visitors can pick the kind of transport that suits their trip and their licence. Free delivery and collection at Malta International Airport means you can step off the plane and straight onto your vehicle.

UK drivers will find it a straightforward alternative to buses and taxis, especially for reaching beaches and villages. The company is listed in our directory of car hire in Malta, alongside other firms you can compare.

The fleet and daily rates

Prices are printed per day, and the longer the rental, the lower the daily rate. Scooters start at €14 a day for the Peugeot Tweet 125cc and the Peugeot Kisbee 50cc, and at €18 for the Peugeot Django 125cc. Cars start at €20 for the Peugeot 107, available as an automatic or a manual, and at €22 for the Toyota Aygo X and the Citroen C3. The Triumph Scrambler 400 X motorbike is also €22 a day.

Licence rules depend on the machine. The Tweet needs a category A1, A2 or A licence, and AM is not accepted for it, whereas the Kisbee 50cc can be ridden on a category AM or B licence. Check your licence against the vehicle before you book, and ask the company if you are unsure which category applies.

Locations and airport delivery

The Sliema office is at 26 Triq Viani, in the Sliema tourist area, where our guide to hotels in Sliema will help you choose a place to stay. The second base is at 22 Mifsud in Santa Luċija, near the airport, and vehicles can also be delivered to and collected from the airport itself at no charge.

Pick-up and return can be at any of these three points, which is handy if you land at one end of the island and leave from another. The minimum rental is one day. Pick-up is available from 8:30am, and the latest same-day return time is 5:30pm; a late return is charged as an extra day.

What is included and what to expect

Two helmets come with every scooter or motorbike, which is required by Maltese law, and there is no mileage limit. You may drive anywhere in Malta or Gozo as long as you stay on tarmac roads, and off-road driving carries a €100 penalty. Cars are fully comprehensive insured, so extra protection is not required. The optional Collision Damage Waiver costs €25 a day for cars and motorcycles and €15 a day for scooters, and it covers minor scratches only.

A security deposit is taken: €350 for a scooter or motorcycle and €500 for any four-wheeled vehicle. It covers fines and minor damage and is refunded after 48 hours, or after 24 hours for cash payments. Cars can be rented with a debit card linked to Visa, MasterCard or another internationally recognised network. Bookings include a refund policy that lets you cancel free of charge, and changes are arranged directly with the company.

Planning your routes

The company offers a free guide to places you can visit by scooter or car, including Malta's parking rules. Good days out include the capital, covered in our Valletta guide, the north-west coast around Golden Bay, and the island of Gozo, described in our Gozo guide. Our Malta weather guide will help you choose between a scooter and a car.

When you are ready, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page, tell us your dates, the vehicle you prefer and where you want to collect it, and we will pass your message to LA Rentals Malta.
