L'Ecole Msida is a purpose-designed childcare centre beside the harbour in Msida, a busy town between Valletta and Sliema. It welcomes children from 3 months to 3 years, and the group that runs it follows a Nordic approach to early childhood education, which puts play, relationships and time outdoors at the centre of learning.
The Msida centre opened in January 2020 and is the fourth of six L'Ecole centres. It is listed on VisitMalta.co.uk with the other nurseries in Malta, and is a short drive from the capital described in our Valletta guide.
A day at the centre
Children are placed in groups by age, with staff to child ratios of 3 to 1 for babies up to a year, 5 to 1 for 12 to 24 months and 6 to 1 for 24 to 36 months, or a mixed group at 6 to 1. Days combine planned but unstructured activities with outdoor play, a nap, nappy changing and potty support, role play and story time.
The programme includes circle time, crafts, music, dancing and messy play, weekly themes such as science, health and growing food, colour weeks, outings, concerts, toddler yoga sessions, parent activity days and an annual celebration day. Parents provide food and drink from home, and pushchairs are not kept at the centre. The group's core values are safety, entertainment through play, education, teamwork and open communication, and it keeps several lines open so parents hear about progress regularly. Staff understand that parting from a young child is hard and say they will help parents through the transition.
Free Childcare Scheme, fees and settling in
All L'Ecole centres are registered with the Maltese Free Childcare Scheme, so employed or studying parents who live and work in Malta may qualify for free care, and others can apply by fee. UK parents who have just moved can read our Malta relocation guide, the Malta tax guide for UK nationals and the digital nomad guide for Malta to see how work and residence fit with the scheme.
A one-time, non-refundable registration fee secures a place, and the amount is not published. Settling in is gradual: children can start with an hour or two and build up. The centre is closed on public holidays, for some days at Christmas and for a week in August, and children born between January and April move on to kindergarten in February while those born from May to December move in October.
Staff, standards and the wider group
The centres are licensed and registered with the Department of Education, and the carers hold a level 4 diploma in child care, food handling certification and paediatric first aid. Staff attend workshops led by child psychologists, psychotherapists and doctors. The Msida centre manager is named as Nadesh Parnis, and Bettina Vilhjalmsson is general manager of the group.
L'Ecole opened its first centre in Qormi in 2011, followed by Żebbuġ, Siġġiewi, Msida, Blata l-Bajda (open on Saturdays) and St Julian's. Places are first come, first served, and parents are invited to arrange a meeting and a walk around the centre. The Blata l-Bajda and St Julian's centres were described as the group's two flagship sites when they opened in 2020, and the Żebbuġ centre is the largest. Each centre has a named manager, and the team page shows that the group works with experienced early educators who share a play-based outlook.
