Malta Blue Diving is a dive centre in Sliema, based on Tower Road. It teaches scuba diving to complete beginners, certifies new divers on PADI and SSI courses and takes qualified divers out to Malta's wrecks and reefs. Its promise is to do its training in the best conditions and to help beginners feel comfortable and at ease from the first breath underwater.
For a UK visitor, the centre is easy to find, since it is at the Beach Club of the Preluna Hotel. It is listed with other dive centres in Malta in our directory.
Trying scuba for the first time
The Discover Scuba Diving experience is a fun, easy introduction for anyone aged 10 and over, and it is not a certification course. You have a short theory lesson, practise skills in the pool or in shallow, calm water, then make one or two open water dives to a maximum of 12 metres. The prices printed are €90 for one dive and €150 for two dives, or €180 for a try dive followed by a wreck dive.
The wreck option is the one to choose if you want a standout first day. Your first dive covers the equipment, breathing and moving underwater, and the key safety skills. On the second dive you explore a historic WW2 shipwreck with your instructor. The two-dive version earns the SSI Basic Diver certificate and you receive underwater images of the experience. If you later complete a PADI or SSI Open Water course with the centre, the introductory dive counts as credit towards it.
Diving for children
The Scuba Ranger programme, priced at €95, lets children aged 8 and over breathe underwater with scuba gear in shallow water or in the centre's own swimming pool. Children must be comfortable in the water, but no previous experience is needed. The programme can also be used for a birthday or party, and the centre can run private children's programmes in your own pool, including a junior open water course. Our Sliema hotels guide is useful if you are planning a family base nearby.
Courses and specialities
The Scuba Diver course, from €370 to €440 depending on the option chosen, is for people who want to dive in open water under professional supervision but lack time for the full programme. It includes three pool sessions and two open water dives to 12 metres, and it can be upgraded to Open Water later.
The Open Water Diver course, from €500 to €595 depending on the option chosen (SSI, PADI or NOVA scuba), adds six pool sessions and four open water dives to 18 metres, and the centre's own pool is used for training. The Advanced Open Water course, from €375 to €495, requires the Open Water certificate and offers five different dives drawn from five specialty programmes, so you can sample options before committing. Specialities listed include Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, Night and Limited Visibility, Underwater Navigator, Photo and Video, Enriched Air Nitrox, Dry Suit Diving, Rescue Diver and Dive Master, along with refresher dives and a snorkelling academy.
