Malta Surf School is a family-owned water sports school that teaches surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, wakeboarding and surf skating, mostly from Għajn Tuffieħa Bay on Malta's north-west coast. Group and private lessons include the boards and wetsuits you need, and the school also offers equipment hire and team-building sessions. Send your enquiry through the VisitMalta.co.uk form on this page and we will pass it to the school.
Malta Surf School is the first and only surf school on the island, run by a family that treats surfing as a way of life rather than a sideline. The aim is simple: teach you enough to become self-sufficient in the water, so that you can carry on practising by yourself after your holiday. Lessons are planned around the weather forecast and sea state, which matters in the Mediterranean, where there are not waves every day.
Most sessions take place at Għajn Tuffieħa Bay, a sheltered beach on the north-west coast that suits beginners. If you are staying nearby, our Golden Bay guide covers the neighbouring sands, and the best beaches in Malta page helps you compare the whole coastline.
Surf lessons for beginners and improvers
The group beginner lesson lasts one hour and costs €50 per person. You start on the sand, learning how to stand up and take off on the board, then move into the water with an experienced coach and catch waves together as a group. Surfboards and wetsuits are provided, and a memorable group photo is included. These lessons are designed for complete beginners, with the goal of getting everyone standing on their first wave.
If you would rather have undivided attention, the private lesson runs for an hour and a half at €100 and takes one person or at most two. It begins with essential information about the board and the surf spot, moves on to stand-up and take-off technique, and then you head into the water with your instructor beside you. Free photos of the session are included. Experienced surfers are also looked after: the school guides you to the best spot for the day according to the forecast.
On days when the sea is flat, a one-hour surf skate lesson at €20 lets you practise stance, balance and turns on land, building muscle memory that carries over to the waves. The school provides the equipment.
Stand-up paddleboarding and coastal tours
Stand-up paddleboarding is the school's answer to calm days. The one-hour SUP lesson costs €30 and covers balance, paddling, turning and safety in shallow water, after which you explore the bay together. Boards, paddles and a wetsuit if needed are all supplied, so you only need to arrive ready for the water.
For something longer, the SUP tour to Ta Marija Cave takes about three hours and costs €50. It is an intermediate-level outing that starts on the beach at Għajn Tuffieħa at about 8.30 in the morning and returns around midday, with stops along the coastline for photographs and your guides staying close to the group throughout. Paddling suits travellers who like a quieter day out alongside the wider water sports in Malta available around the island.
Wakeboarding, hire and team building
The wakeboard lesson lasts an hour and a half and costs €65. It begins with a briefing and warm-up on the dock, then you ride with a wakeboard, lifejacket and wetsuit provided. Your coach talks to you through a communication headset as you ride, and video and photos of the session are taken for you to keep.
You can also hire a surfboard for an hour at €20 or a stand-up paddleboard for an hour at €15. Companies can book surfing or SUP sessions for team building: a SUP session takes up to 12 people per hour and a surf session up to 6 people per hour, with extra hours added for larger groups. All activities depend on the weather. The school also runs a surf camp, boat charter and an online course, so ask about dates and details through the enquiry form.
Planning your day on the north-west coast
Base yourself around the conditions: the Malta weather guide shows what to expect month by month, and the school adjusts activities to suit the sea on the day. A morning lesson fits neatly with a day out in the wider area, whether that is the Mellieħa guide for the beaches and bays of the north, the Blue Lagoon on Comino or a trip across to Gozo using our Gozo guide.
If you want more ideas for the rest of the week, things to do in Malta gives an overview of the island, and our Malta holidays overview helps with planning the trip itself. To ask Malta Surf School about lesson times, group sizes or equipment, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message on to the school.
