Services, hours and details last checked against NedMalta's own published information.
NedMalta is a volunteer-run community for Dutch and Flemish speakers in Malta, based in Naxxar and active since 2013. It publishes practical guidance on holidays, internships, work, housing and health, and organises events, boat parties, creative workshops and photography. Enquiries go through the VisitMalta.co.uk form on this page.
NedMalta calls itself the Dutch-speaking community in Malta, and since 2013 it has helped visitors, students, workers and residents from the Netherlands and Flanders find their feet on the islands. It is run as a volunteer organisation from Naxxar and is listed in our directory of tour operators in Malta, because so much of what it does centres on events, boat trips and things to do.
Most of the website is written in Dutch, so it is best known among Dutch and Belgian travellers. It is still worth knowing about for English speakers: its workshops are taught in English, its photography services are open to anyone, and its guidance on everyday Malta, from buses to housing, applies to any newcomer.
Who NedMalta is
The organisation is registered as NedMalta VO and describes itself as a volunteer group that shares free information, organises events and connects people so that nobody has to manage alone. The website draws more than 35,000 visitors a month, hundreds of active members and thousands of articles, blogs and tips covering the islands.
The 2026 board is made up of Geert van Raay as chairperson, Tim Jacobs as secretary, Jamy Stienen as treasurer and Wessel Keizer as a board member. Alongside the information work, the community offers free support to Dutch speakers who run into difficulty in Malta, such as a medical emergency or a need for legal help, and gives a share of its income to organisations working for safety and equal rights on the island.
Guidance for visitors, students and workers
The site is organised around the questions newcomers ask most. Its main areas are holidays and sightseeing, internships, work, housing, and emergencies and health. The internship pages cover finding a placement, finding somewhere to live, preparing for Malta and funding the stay, and housing pages cover student houses, rooms, long lets and buying a home.
Practical tips are plentiful. The FAQ notes that tourists pay €2 for a bus ticket, while foreigners staying three months or longer can apply for a free bus card. Malta drives on the left, as in the UK, and the FAQ points out that traffic behaviour can be lively. For longer-term planning, our own guides on relocating to Malta from the UK and working remotely from Malta cover the British angle in English.
Everyday tips from the FAQ
The long FAQ page answers the questions that Dutch speakers send year after year, and much of it is useful to any visitor. Malta uses the euro, it is in the same time zone as the Netherlands, and the two official languages are Maltese and English, so English speakers get by easily. Shops are generally open on Sundays, and buses and ferries run on Sundays too, though timetables can vary by season and route.
For health and safety, the advice is to drink bottled or filtered water rather than tap water, the legal drinking age is 17 and it is sensible to carry ID in bars and clubs, and 112 is the general emergency number. Wise or Revolut are suggested for card payments, and Melita for home internet and mobile numbers. Treat these as starting points and check current details before you travel.
Pages on swimming, sightseeing in Valletta, Gozo and Naxxar, wildlife, food and public holidays make up the rest of the holiday section. Our own best beaches in Malta guide adds an English-language view of the swimming spots.
Community groups and meeting people
Dutch speakers arriving in Malta for the first time often want to know who else is around, and this is where the community earns its keep. A newcomer on a placement or a first job can find friends, share a taxi to an event or ask where to buy a particular item, and visitors on holiday can ask for local tips before they travel.
The community runs WhatsApp groups where members ask questions, receive news, offer or request help, hear about events and meet others. One group carries announcements, and another is a general chat for anyone arriving in Malta in 2026 or already living there.
Contact is mostly digital because the volunteers are often out organising events. The team replies on social media and by message, and it takes questions through forms on its site. Visitors can call in at the office only by appointment.
Events, boat parties and nights out
Events are a large part of what NedMalta does. The programme includes student nights, Kingsday celebrations, summer events, nightlife in Paceville, boat trips, jet ski hire, excursions and a beerpong table rental. Tickets for boat parties such as Lazy Pirate and for day cruises are booked directly on the NedMalta website.
The news section also covers local happenings. The Malta Whisky Festival returns on Saturday 21 November 2026 for its eleventh edition at Giardini Lambrosa in Rabat, starting at 19:00, and the Rabat area is covered in our Mdina guide. A recent article lists three favourite shops for Halloween costumes, and a cocktail workshop at Tex Mex is another recent listing. For other boat days, see Amazing Boat Trips Malta, and for the famous swimming stop, our Blue Lagoon guide.
Creative workshops in Ħamrun
In autumn 2026 NedMalta organised a series of five hands-on workshops with its partner CY Beauty & Wellness at 86 Triq Barth in Ħamrun. The sessions were scheduled between 21 October and 4 November 2026: making your own perfume, a moisturising massage candle, lipstick, a scented candle and soap. Four of the sessions cost slightly more than the scented candle workshop, which is €40 per person.
No experience is needed, and every session includes all materials, two hours of guidance, a welcome drink and a snack, and your own creation to take home. Groups are limited to ten people, workshops are given in English so that non-Dutch speakers can join, and they are open to all ages. NedMalta members receive 10% off wellness treatments at the partner studio, and more sessions may follow if interest is high.
Photography and creative projects
Tim Jacobs offers event, food, location and portrait photography in Malta. Prices start at €30 per hour of on-site shooting, which includes an extra hour of professional editing, and that rate suits casual events such as parties and nightlife. Weddings and large events may be priced differently, and travel costs apply on bookings of one or two hours but not on bookings of three hours or more.
Optional extras are delivery within 48 hours for €30 more, with standard delivery within a week, and adding your logo to the photos for €20. The creative side of the site also includes bodycasting, including baby hand and foot casts, funny T-shirt designs, drawings and paintings, and a collection of banknotes from more than 100 countries.
The shop
The webshop sells the GotYou strategy board game for two players aged eight and over, Dutch flags, a 10 metre bunting line, a scarf, a cape and a few shirts. Most of it is aimed at fans who come to Kingsday and other Dutch-themed events.
Visitors planning a wider trip can pair NedMalta's information with our things to do in Malta, the Valletta guide, the Gozo guide and the Malta weather guide. If you are choosing a base, see where to stay in Malta.
