Potter's Pharmacy combines a dispensing pharmacy with a family doctor surgery in the heart of St Julian's, at 39 Triq il-Wilga. For a visitor or resident it means medicines, a GP consultation, simple tests and vaccinations can often be handled under one roof, which is helpful when you are away from your own doctor.
It is listed on VisitMalta.co.uk among our pharmacies in Malta. This page describes the services offered and does not give medical advice. The pharmacy also gives 24 hour online support, so you can send a question outside shop hours, and a team of pharmacists whose job is to make sure medicines are used safely and effectively. If you would like to see the shop first, the shop sign is shown in the photograph on this page.
Pharmacy services
The pharmacists dispense and prepare medicines, including repeat dispensing and homecare, and aim to give timely, cost effective service so you can recover and get on with your day. The range of pharmacy services includes help with minor illnesses, emergency care including emergency contraception, and reviews of how medicines are used.
Further services include early screening and testing, support with chronic conditions, vaccination, checks of blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose and weight, and help with stopping smoking. The business is led by its founder and chief executive, Richard Muldoone.
Family doctor and blood tests
A family doctor is available in the pharmacy six days a week for significant or minor health concerns across the whole family, and the pharmacy offers special prices on medication prescribed by the doctor. Anyone settling on the island can read more in our Malta relocation guide.
Blood tests are available for acute illnesses and regular check ups, including full blood count, thyroid, chlamydia and liver function tests.
Vaccines, COVID-19 testing and fit to fly certificates
Vaccines on offer include polio, measles, hepatitis A and B, typhoid and flu. If you are planning a trip, ask the doctor which vaccines suit your journey. Our Malta holidays overview may help with trip planning.
COVID-19 testing covers a rapid antigen test at €35, with results in around 15 minutes, and a PCR test at €140. Fit to fly certificates can be issued after a negative PCR swab, signed by a local Maltese GP, and can also be provided for other medical reasons. If you are flying home, see our flights to Malta guide for routes from the UK.
How the tests work
The rapid antigen test is a visual read test that needs no laboratory equipment. A nasal or nasopharyngeal swab is placed in a liquid, the liquid is dropped on a test cartridge and the result shows after about 15 minutes, for people with or without symptoms. The PCR test looks for viral genetic material and is carried out in an accredited laboratory, so it takes longer, and it is the test linked to fit to fly certificates.
Airlines and destinations set their own entry rules, which change, so check your travel requirements before you book a test. The pharmacy can provide swab results on their own or together with a letter written by one of its doctors.
Health information and checks
The pharmacy publishes short health articles, for example on what blood tests are, health screenings that women should consider and men's health checks. They are general reading rather than advice for your own situation, so speak to the doctor or pharmacist about your own needs. Parents can arrange immunisations for children and the rest of the family at the same visit.
