History and the new course

The club was founded in 1888, when Lieutenant-General Sir Henry D'Oyley Torrens opened the original nine-hole course. A major investment completed in 2025 saw all 18 greens rebuilt to USGA specification, and the new course reopened in September 2025.

The upgraded course has already hosted international golf. In July 2026 the club staged the European Men's and Ladies' Team Shield Championships, welcoming 24 teams from 18 nations. It was the first international championship of that level held in Malta since the country affiliated with the European Golf Association in 2007, and Malta's men won the country's first EGA gold medal. A Ladies European Tour event is planned for May 2027. The championship opened with an individual stroke-play qualifier, then moved to three days of knockout match play, with 14 men's teams and 10 ladies' teams taking part, and the Malta ladies' team won the country's first silver medal. Course records were set or matched during the week, and the club thanks its members, who gave up the course for the event and lent their trolleys to visiting teams.

Visiting and green fees

Visitors book through the club's online tee booking system, or can phone reception. Players need a valid handicap, to be shown on the first day, or proof of membership of an overseas golf club. Full payment is due in advance and an email confirmation follows. The club asks guests to read its dress code and etiquette guidelines before they arrive.

The 2026/27 green fee for 18 holes is €100, or €55 for juniors. A guest of a member pays €65 for an adult and €40 for a junior. The fee includes temporary membership of the Marsa Sports Club and the Royal Malta Golf Club. Club lockers for clubs and clothes are free of charge.

Equipment hire

If you are travelling without your clubs, a TaylorMade Premium set costs €55 for 18 holes, a TaylorMade Standard set €40 and basic club hire €30. A golf trolley costs €7, a Motocaddy electric trolley €20, which should be pre-booked, and an E-Z-GO electric buggy €50.

Members, juniors and the clubhouse

Beyond visitors, the club has a Men's Section, a Women's Section and a nine-hole section called the Happy Gilmores, which gives newer players a gentle start in competitive golf. The Junior Academy is capped at 100 juniors, led by Diana Suke and coached by PGA Professional Henning Schulze-Doering, and the club hosts the Malta Junior Open, which draws young players from more than 20 countries. Coaching and training, a clubhouse, a trophy cabinet and the Fairway Terrace and Restaurant complete the picture. The 2026/27 Club Captain is Timothy Cleasby and the Ladies' Captain is Maria Camilleri Sandu, with Paul Stoner as chairman. This season the club also hosts a US Kids Local Tour event.
