World of Wines by Charles Grech is the Ta' Xbiex branch of one of Malta's oldest drinks merchants. A merchant since 1881

The House of Charles Grech was founded in March 1881 by a man who returned to Malta after a distinguished career in the Royal Navy. He opened a small tobacconist and bottle shop on Republic Street in Valletta and chose the best products he could find. His care attracted the custom of Malta's elite and the business grew quickly, and its doors stayed open through the Second World War, even with bombs threatening. What you can buy

Wine is the biggest category, with several hundred labels from countries including Italy, France, South Africa, Australia, Spain, Argentina, New Zealand, Portugal and Chile. Choose by red, white, rosé, champagne, sparkling, port, organic or non-alcoholic, and wine gift packs are available. Example bottles on the website are Masseria Sasseo Primitivo at €11.94 and Squeling Pig Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc at €8.30.

Spirits cover single malt and blended whisky, bourbon, Irish and Japanese whiskey, brandy, cognac, gin, rum, tequila, vodka, liqueurs and ready to drink cocktails. The cigar department lists Cuban names such as Cohiba, Montecristo, Partagas and Romeo y Julieta alongside new world and machine made cigars, with accessories such as humidors, cutters, ashtrays, lighters, pipes and leather pouches.
