67 Kapitali is a corner bar on Old Bakery Street, in the upper part of Valletta, that puts craft beer first and backs it up with honest food built on Maltese produce. It sits opposite the historic Manoel Theatre, a few minutes on foot from the ferry that crosses from Sliema and within easy reach of City Gate. There is no booking system: you turn up, find a seat and let the bar staff steer you through the taps. Our page on restaurants in Valletta covers the rest of the city's tables.

Ftira, soups and deli boards

The food is designed to go with the beer. Signature sandwiches are made on freshly baked Maltese ftira and matched to particular Lord Chambray brews, and they sit alongside salads put together from what the market has that day and soups made in house. The olives are marinated on site, and the chutney, pesto and salsa are homemade too. Vegan and gluten-free choices run through the menu at lunch and dinner.

The most popular way to eat here is a board you compose yourself. Two items cost €13.75, three €17.75, four €22.75, five €26.75 and six €30.75, and every board arrives with fresh Maltese bread, those marinated olives and chutney. The cheeses range from local ġbejna, the small Maltese cheeselets, to truffle Pecorino, sweet Gorgonzola, oak-smoked cheddar, Wensleydale with cranberries, brie, feta and halloumi. On the meat side there is Parma ham aged for at least a year, spicy spianata salami, Napoli salami, mortadella, smoked ham and grilled pork cheek, plus Norwegian smoked salmon. A house special is the Magic Hummus, made without oil but with the bar's own 67 IPA and finished with chilli.

If choosing feels like work, four ready-made boards take the decision away: Cheese Lovers and the Carni Board at €22.75 each, A Bit of Everything at €26.75 and the vegan Plant Power Board, with hummus, pesto olives and sun-dried tomatoes, at €12.75. Extra bread, chutney, olives or sun-dried tomatoes cost €2.50, and garlic and herb roast potatoes €3.50.

Craft beer and the Lord Chambray connection

Beer is the reason most people come. The bar keeps one of the broadest selections of local craft beer in Malta, with a rotating list on draught and many more in bottles and cans, and staff happily pour tasters until you find the right glass. 67 Kapitali is a flagship venue for the Lord Chambray brewery, and two collaborations are brewed specially for it: the 67 IPA, a double IPA, and 67 Weiss, a wheat beer made with clementines grown on the islands. Lord Chambray cans such as Blue Lagoon and Fungus Rock cost €6.00.

The fridge reaches well beyond Malta, with Tiny Rebel, To Øl, Sierra Nevada, Basqueland from the Basque Country and Belgian fruit beers, alongside Maltese Huskie ales and Tuff ciders. For non-beer drinkers there are spritzes, signature cocktails, Prosecco at €6.00 a glass, a short list of whites, rosés and reds including a natural South African rosé, organic sodas, juices, coffee and alcohol-free beers. Our Valletta guide has more ideas for an evening in the capital, and if you are crossing on the ferry, our guide to hotels in Sliema covers the far side of the harbour.

Old Bakery Street and the streets around

Old Bakery Street runs down the Marsamxett side of Valletta, and its own architecture is part of the draw. About 100 metres away, Palazzo Correa was raised on the same street in 1689 for the knight Fra Antonio Correa de Sousa and was the first building in Valletta designed in the Mannerist manner; Grand Master Hompesch later rented it. Also about 100 metres away, the dome of the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel rises over the skyline, a church rebuilt between 1958 and 1981 on the site of a sixteenth-century predecessor lost in the war. The Archbishop's Palace, a seventeenth-century residence, is a similar distance.

Slightly further, about 150 metres away, St Paul's Pro-Cathedral stands in Independence Square; it is one of three Anglican cathedrals of the Diocese in Europe and was built where the Auberge d'Allemagne stood until 1839. Our guide to hotels in Valletta helps if you want to stay within these streets.

Opening hours and neighbours
