A Collective is an architecture and design studio founded in 2014 and based in Attard, Malta. It designs homes, offices and furniture, from townhouse conversions and villas to a telecoms headquarters, guiding projects from concept to interior detailing. Enquiries go through the VisitMalta.co.uk form on this page.

A Collective is a Malta-based architecture and design studio, established in 2014 and run from Attard, the garden town beside Mdina and Rabat. The partners, Steven Risiott, an architect, and Patricia Risiott, shape its work around dialogue with clients, the context of each site, sustainability and a search for design that lasts.

Its portfolio covers private homes, offices and furniture, and the studio is listed in both our architects in Malta and interior designers in Malta directories, which is helpful if you want one team to handle the building and its interior.

Philosophy and approach

The studio aims to create spatial experiences by working with the basic ingredients of architecture: space, proportion, light and materials. It prefers quality over stylistic gloss, and it roots each design in its context so that new buildings add to the local landscape and improve life for the people who use them. The approach is architectural first, concerned with how daylight enters a building and the play of shadow it creates, using a palette of honest, pure and natural materials.

Sustainability runs through the work. The studio considers environmental impact at every stage, through adaptive reuse of existing buildings, passive heating and cooling, and designing towards zero-energy homes. It also stresses a real dialogue with clients, so that a brief develops clearly and leads to a distinctive solution, and it can take a project all the way from concept through interior detailing, finishing and furnishing.

Homes and heritage

Dar Il-Hena, in Mosta, shows the studio's attitude to historic townscapes. Faced with a conservation area where genuine townhouses are being replaced by imitations, the studio stripped away poor-quality additions from a modest single-storey house, added a full floor and a recessed upper level in keeping with neighbouring roofs, and built the plan around a central lightwell that turns rooms towards calm courtyards. A screen of reconstituted limestone breeze blocks cools the new floor and echoes the original perforated parapet. The 164 square metre house was finished in 2024.

Greenhouse is a 160 square metre apartment in Balzan, completed in 2019. The studio adapted the plans while the building was still going up so that the home could draw the outdoors in, using exposed concrete ceilings, terrazzo floors that meet the terrace deck, and bespoke walnut and quartzite furniture. Ta' Fraxku, a 779 square metre villa in Bidnija approved by the planning authority, is raised on stilts among trees, with breeze block screens providing shade and privacy.

Other homes include Townhouse No 3, Umbra, Ħal Mula Townhouse, Villa Olea, a seafront apartment and a modernist villa. If you enjoy historic streets, browse our Mdina guide, and see hotels in Mdina and Rabat for a stay close to the studio.

Workplaces and furniture

GO Campus, in Żejtun, is a 2,700 square metre redesign of the headquarters of a leading Maltese telecoms company, completed in 2025. It supports hot desking and remote working with a flexible layout: an orange terrazzo reception, a courtyard-like hub on each floor, north-facing workstations, meeting rooms of different sizes including one for sixteen people, and a canteen with a sculptural tiled bar. Another office project is the interior of the Global Translation Solutions reception.

Away from buildings, the studio designs products. Salini is a bedroom collection inspired by Malta's salt pans, with sculptural flat-panel pieces that play with geometry, light and shadow. It also makes bespoke items such as a drinks cabinet, and it has shown work in exhibitions including Akka. Press coverage includes a feature on architecture and design in Malta Today.
