Arthall is a contemporary art gallery in Victoria, the capital of Gozo, and one of the island's most active places for modern painting, ceramics and printmaking. Its motto is "Let art find you", and the idea behind it is to bring art to people who have traditionally been left out of the art world, rather than keeping it behind a velvet rope.

For a UK visitor, it makes an easy addition to a day in Gozo: a gallery that shows serious contemporary work, runs a regular programme of openings and lets you buy directly. It is listed in our directory of art galleries in Malta, and our Gozo guide will help you plan the rest of the day.

What the gallery is about

Arthall focuses on selling and promoting contemporary art, both Maltese and international. It leans towards work that is avant-garde, ironic or provocative, and it wants the art on its walls to open up new ideas rather than simply confirm what viewers already think. Alongside the visual arts, it welcomes philosophy, music, poetry and literature, so the space works as a meeting point for discussion as well as a shop window.

The gallery is led by its director, Marta Obiols Fornell, who was named Gozo's Best Female Entrepreneur of the Year for 2019.

Artists and the collection

The gallery represents a long list of artists, among them Tomas Hed, Hui Sun, Anže Gallus Petelin, Tony Briffa, Vince Briffa, Jane Birchall, Mark Xuereb, Graham Gurr and Sergio Muscat. The Hitchcock Collection, with works connected to Matisse, Picasso and Chagall, has also been shown. Tomas Hed has the largest body of work in the online catalogue, with well over a hundred pieces, and several other artists have a dozen or more.

The range of media is wide. You will find oil and acrylic paintings, ceramics, etchings, lithographs, drawings, sculpture and photography. Prices are shown against each work. Examples include a Selby print at €29, Mike Ross etchings at €150 and €350, Hui Sun's An Open Book II at €750, Anže Gallus Petelin's Rooster paintings at €400 each, and Tomas Hed's painting Pandora at €3,500. Sold works stay on the site marked as sold, which gives a useful picture of what has found buyers.

Exhibitions, talks and launches

Arthall runs a steady programme of openings, usually on Friday evenings. Recent and upcoming events include a talk on Rembrandt's drawings by Jacques Roland on Friday 30 October at 7.30pm, a meet-the-artist event with ceramicist Jane Birchall, and The Essence of Gozo, a show of her work on the island's land and sea.

Past exhibitions range from Cockadoodledoo and Tang Ping to Vivid, a solo show by Graham Gurr, and the Arteaporte contemporary art editions. The gallery has also staged a Korean contemporary art exhibition, shows of Vietnamese art, and a curated group show led by a UK-based curator. In December 2025 it hosted the launch of a novel, Tide of War, with a reading and book signing by the author. Buying art and visiting Gozo

The gallery's online shop lists several hundred works, searchable by artist, year, technique and price, and each piece shows its size, date and medium. That makes it straightforward to shortlist favourites at home and then ask about them in person when you reach Victoria.

Our guide to hotels in Gozo is a good place to start if you want to stay overnight rather than make a day trip. When you are ready to ask about a work or an exhibition, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message to Arthall.
