Who is behind Baron Max

The company was founded in 2018 by Maxime Veillet La Vallée, who remains its director. After completing a master's degree in wine in Bordeaux, he moved to Malta with the aim of building a house devoted to fine wine and good food. Operations began in 2019, and the first boutique opened on Rue d'Argens in Gżira on 16 October 2019.

After the disruption of the pandemic, the shop moved to Sliema, where a new boutique opened on the same date in October. Today Baron Max Wines describes itself as the parent of two entities: Baron Max Wine Merchant for retail and Baron Max Wine Bar for wine and dining. The team is small and responsive, and it keeps an eye on emerging growers rather than only established names.

Wines, cheese and gourmet food

Wines are organised by colour, region, appellation, grape and format, and the range includes orange wine, champagne, cava, crémant, Franciacorta, Prosecco and other sparkling styles. Selections on the shop's favourites list include Domaine Perrachon's Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes 2023 at €24,90, Frank Phélan Saint-Estèphe 2017 at €27,90, Château de Béru's Terroirs de Béru Chablis 2022 at €35,00 and Château Hostens-Picant 2016 from Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux at €22,90. Product pages give the appellation, grape variety, certification and suggested food pairings, and note that wines contain sulphites.

Food is a real strength. The shop sells French cheeses such as Brillat-Savarin at €4,90, Camembert de Normandie at €8,90, Mont d'Or at €12,90 and Saint-Félicien at €7,50. There are also duck foie gras, rillettes and confit, with a 130g bloc of Périgord duck foie gras at €14,90 and Périgord duck confit at €19,90, plus tinned sardines and Breton seaweed mustard. Gift selections and hampers are part of the offer, and the shop stocks spirits, beers and ciders too.
