Beer Head is a specialist craft beer bottle shop and tasting room in Naxxar, set up in 2019 to serve the local craft beer community. At that time Malta had no craft beer bottle shop and no beer tasting venues, so the founders opened a small craft beer destination where beer lovers from every background could meet. It is now the island's dedicated craft beer shop, with more than 300 beers on the shelves.
On VisitMalta.co.uk it is listed in our directory of wine merchants and drinks shops in Malta. For a UK visitor staying in the north of the island, it is an easy detour for a gift or a tasting.
The beer range
The beer department is organised by style: alcohol free, amber ale, barrel aged, bitter, classic Belgian, fruit ale, gluten free, IPA, lager and pilsner, New England IPA, pale ale, pastry stout, sour, stout and porter, and wheat beer. You can filter by country, strength, brand, bottle size and price, and by bitterness or fruitiness for some styles.
Beers come from places such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Scotland, Sweden and the UK, with brands including Brewdog, Stigbergets, Brussels Beer Project and De Molen. An in-house beer expert travels in search of new bottles, and fresh beers arrive every week. Craft beer is listed from €3.95, and many bottles carry sale prices well below their original price.
If you are new to craft beer, the style names are a useful guide. IPAs and pale ales are hoppy and aromatic, sours are tart and refreshing, stouts and porters are dark and roasty, and pastry stouts are rich and dessert-like. Lagers and pilsners are lighter and crisp, and Belgian classics such as tripels and saisons are fruity and spicy. Staff are happy to give personalised advice, so describe what you normally drink and ask for a recommendation.
Hot sauces, snacks and gifts
Beyond beer, the shop has a passion for fiery hot sauces and gourmet snacks. The sauces are sorted by heat, from comfortable and medium up to high and extreme. Examples include Yucateco Charred Habanero at €5.50, Brutalero Trinidad Yellow at €7.00 and Vrabsaco Spicy Ketchup at €4.50.
The gift range includes hampers, gift packs, glassware and merchandise, and there are craft ciders, hard seltzers, soft drinks and spirits too. Seasonal items include The Crafty One Advent Calendar at €85.00 (reduced from €95.00) and The Deluxe Advent Calendar at €150.00 (reduced from €165.00).
Guided tastings
Guided tastings are made for couples, groups of friends and staff parties, and you can book them through the shop. They explore beer styles in a relaxed setting, led by someone who knows the bottles well, which makes a change from the usual bars and a good rainy-day or pre-dinner activity.
