Carisma Spa & Wellness at Hugo's H Hotel is a day spa in the middle of St Julian's, the part of Malta best known for restaurants, bars and nightlife. Carisma's roots lie in Turkish bathing traditions, and the hammam is the signature experience here. A hammam is a steamy bathing room built around warm marble, usually under a dome with basins and a heated central platform. The warmth opens the skin before a scrub and a soapy foam massage, and the marble itself adds to the calm. Many visitors from the UK have never tried one, so it is a memorable alternative to a standard massage, and swimwear is optional because the hammam is a private experience. The basic Hammam Ritual lasts 55 minutes: you choose between a kese glove exfoliation or a sea salt exfoliation, then follow it with a traditional foam massage.

The Hammam Deluxe lasts 75 minutes and starts from 139 euros. It adds a hydrating face and body mask and a hair treatment to the exfoliation and foam massage. Longer packages of 80 to 110 minutes combine the hammam with other treatments. Hot and Cold adds a hydrating face mask and a therapeutic massage with cooling gel for tired muscles, Stress Breaker pairs the bath with an anti-stress massage, and Head-to-Toe finishes with a firming facial.

Shorter add-ons are also available, including a face and body mask, a foam massage or a sea salt exfoliation, each with three hours' use of the spa facilities. Single hammam treatments start from €59, and the group lists a private hammam for couples, so ask the spa if you want the room to yourselves.

Massage menu

The spa's massages come from several traditions. You can book hot stone, Indian Ayurvedic, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, Balinese, Thai, Japanese Shiatsu, deep tissue, anti-stress, therapeutic and a Carisma Signature massage, usually lasting between 55 and 110 minutes. For a first visit, the anti-stress massage is the gentlest choice, with slow rhythmic strokes and no deep pressure. Thai massage is done without oil and involves guided stretching, which suits anyone who wants to leave feeling looser. Hot stone massage places heated basalt stones along the lines of tension, Lomi Lomi uses long forearm strokes, Balinese massage blends acupressure with stretching, and Shiatsu uses finger pressure along the body's meridian lines. The Ayurvedic massage uses warm herbal oils and a steady rhythm, and is a good pick if you want something calming but not deep.

A full massage booking starts from €99, deep tissue from €109 and the Carisma Signature, a 110 minute blend of techniques, from €149. Quick 30 minute options start from €59, such as an Indian head massage or foot reflexology, and they include three hours of facility access. Facials here use Phytomer products, a marine skincare range from France. The menu covers deep cleansing, hydration, anti-ageing and firming, and treatments for blemish-prone skin, with prices starting from €55 for shorter options. A Hydrafacial, a serum-led cleansing and hydration treatment, starts from €99.

If you have sensitive skin or any known allergies, mention them before the facial starts so the therapist can choose suitable products. Facial packages add facility access, a spa kit and detox tea or Prosecco, which is a good option if you want a lighter visit than a full massage. Your therapist adjusts each session to your skin rather than following a fixed routine, and the facial beds are in a calm room where you can combine the treatment with time in the pool, and you can buy the home care range to keep up your routine afterwards.
