D Goldline is a jewellery maker as well as a seller, and that is what sets it apart. The company manufactures its own pieces, many of them built around the Maltese cross, and it sells them through its Maltese Falcon shop inside the walls of Mdina, the old capital, as well as through an online shop and other jewellers across the islands.

The shop appears in our directory of jewellery shops in Malta. If you are exploring the silent city, our Mdina guide will help you plan the visit.

A family workshop since 1971

D Goldline Ltd took over the manufacturing arm of Goldline Ltd, which has operated in the Maltese market for decades. The business grew from a collaboration between the first generation of the Desira brothers, which began in 1971, and it remains a small, family run firm. The second generation of the family is now being introduced to the business.

About nine people work there, from sales staff and finance and stock management to the craftsmen who make the jewellery, trained over the years by the Desira brothers. The firm believes it may be the only business in Malta still manufacturing its own jewellery, as similar companies have closed.

Maltese cross jewellery in silver and gold

The core range is jewellery marked with the Maltese cross, from pendants, bangles, earrings and rings to lapel pins and cufflinks. The cross is a historic symbol once associated with the Knights Hospitaller and today with the island itself, a story told in our Knights of Malta guide.

Pieces are made in 925 sterling silver and in white and yellow gold, in both 9kt and 18kt, and all of it is stamped in line with Maltese regulations. The online catalogue can be filtered by metal, colour, who the piece is for and style, including crucifix, filigree, initials, Maltese cross and stones and pearls.

What you can buy and what it costs

Printed prices show a wide spread. An Eye of Osiris ring is €20.00, a birthstones pendant with chain is €39.00, Maltese cross loop earrings run from €30.00 to €45.00, a sterling silver personalised name piece is around €43.00 and an 18kt small initial pendant is €110.00. Bracelets and bangles, earrings, necklaces and pendants each have their own page, and the catalogue holds more than a thousand items.

Pendants include crucifixes, the eight-pointed Maltese cross, a trilogy design, a Tree of Life and an Evil Eye, while the ring range takes in diamond solitaires, black onyx rings and Maltese signet rings in coloured enamel for men and women. Earrings come as studs, hooks, drops and hoops, and necklaces in anchor, belcher, figaro and twisted curb links. For background on the island behind the symbol, see about Malta. Custom and handcrafted jewellery is part of the offer, and the firm is proud of its craftsmanship. In 2014 the Desira brothers and two other workers won first prize in the Craftmanship Maltese competition with a filigree model of the old Opera House at Theatre Square, made in 925 sterling silver over about ten months and some 1,400 hours, weighing 6.2 kg.

Visiting Mdina

The shop is at 27 Villegaignon Street, among the narrow lanes of Mdina. The city is quiet, historic and compact, so you can combine it with lunch and a walk along the bastions. For a place to stay nearby, see hotels in Mdina and Rabat, and for the wider picture see where to stay in Malta.

Mdina fits neatly into a day with the capital: our Valletta guide and things to do in Malta suggest what to add. Planning from the UK? See flights to Malta and the Malta holidays overview.
