FELTOM, the Federation of English Language Teaching Organisations Malta, is a non-profit body based in Republic Street, Valletta, that accredits and represents 14 English language schools in Malta and Gozo. It sets quality standards, advocates for the sector and helps students and agents choose a school. Send your questions through the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass them to FELTOM.

FELTOM is the national federation of English language schools in Malta, and for a UK family weighing up a study trip for a teenager, a gap-year course for an adult or a work-related English programme, it is a useful first stop. Rather than selling lessons itself, FELTOM sets the standards that its member schools must meet and helps students understand what accreditation means.

The federation's office is at The Exchange Building on Republic Street in Valletta, the capital's main thoroughfare. Our Valletta guide describes the city around it, and the wider directory of language schools in Malta lists individual schools you can compare.

What FELTOM is and what it does

FELTOM stands for the Federation of English Language Teaching Organisations Malta. It was established on 5 December 1989 by a group of language schools and is a self-regulating non-profit organisation. Its work has three strands: quality assurance, advocacy, and marketing and promotion.

On quality, the federation launched its accreditation scheme in 2006. Accredited schools are assessed on student safety and welfare, academic standards, clear and reliable information, and engaging social and leisure activities. On advocacy, FELTOM works with legislators, government bodies and international agents, and it played a pivotal role in creating the world's first law regulating English language schools. It is the only officially recognised English language teaching association in Malta under Legal Notice 221 of 2015.

On promotion, it joins international fairs, runs campaigns, publishes editorials, hosts workshops and conferences and builds relationships with agents overseas.

The schools and the courses

FELTOM represents 14 accredited schools across Malta and Gozo. Members include Alpha School of English, AM Language, Berlitz ELA, Cavendish School of English, ClubClass, Easy School of Languages, European School of English, Inlingua Malta, the Institute of English Language Studies, NSTS Malta, Sprachcaffe Languages PLUS, and BELS Malta and BELS Gozo.

Courses cover general English, business English, IELTS and Cambridge exam preparation and other specialised programmes, from beginners to advanced learners. Students range in age from 5 to 85, and accredited schools emphasise small classes, interactive teaching and internationally recognised certificates. BELS Malta, for example, is in St Paul's Bay and offers seasonal junior courses and year-round adult courses, so families can learn together.

If you are tempted by the Gozo option, our Gozo guide shows what the smaller island offers outside class time.

Agents, projects and partners

Education agents are an important audience. FELTOM co-created the Malta Agent Training Course with ICEF, a certification that helps agents guide students considering Malta for English language, vocational or tertiary study. It is the first ICEF country-specific course for Malta.

The federation also leads the Aviation English Toolkit project with the Bulgarian Air Force Academy, funded by the Erasmus+ programme, to develop English training for cabin crew, ground staff and other aviation professionals. Partners and collaborators include the ELT Council, the Malta Tourism Authority, GuardMe for student insurance, Grant Thornton, Audio Visual Centre, JL Real Estate and Supreme Travel.

Students who need guidance on visas or settling on the island may find the ACC Malta Immigration Advisors listing useful, and our Malta relocation guide covers moving here for longer.

Planning a study trip

Studying in Malta means practising English every day among an international community, with the island's history, landscapes and food on the doorstep. The best beaches in Malta and things to do in Malta guides suggest ways to fill free afternoons, and the Malta weather guide helps you pick a term. When you are ready to travel, see our page on flights to Malta and the guide to where to stay in Malta.

To ask FELTOM how to choose an accredited school, or how accreditation works, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message to the federation.
