GamingMalta is an independent non-profit foundation, set up by the Government of Malta and the Malta Gaming Authority, that promotes Malta as a base for iGaming, video game development and esports. GamingMalta is the foundation behind Malta's reputation as the Home of Gaming Excellence. Since 2015 it has driven the strategy that supports the island's interactive entertainment sector, from iGaming to video game development, immersive technologies and esports. It is an independent non-profit body, jointly established by the Government of Malta and the Malta Gaming Authority.

Although it is listed in our casinos category, GamingMalta is not a casino and does not operate games or take bets. Its job is promotion and support for the industry, and it works with companies, investors and public authorities under the slogan Make It In Malta, which it uses to attract innovators, creators and investors. For a UK reader considering a business move, our iGaming in Malta guide explains how the sector fits into the wider economy.

Mission and what it does

The aim is to make Malta known worldwide as a leading home for online and remote gaming. The foundation encourages everyone in the sector to take pride in the Malta name, offers practical backing to companies, and tries to keep the island attractive for firms that want to grow here. It helps the Malta Gaming Authority put its brand strategy and roadmap into practice, and it joins forces with other Maltese promotion bodies to lift the island's overall image.

In practice, that means smoothing the path for businesses and investors, speaking to the local authorities on their behalf, and producing research and industry insight. The foundation also brings people together through events, forums and informal gatherings so that companies across the gaming verticals, from iGaming operators to game studios and esports organisers, can network and collaborate. The foundation is clear that it plays no role in regulation, which remains with the Malta Gaming Authority.

Ecosystem, education and base_camp

GamingMalta shapes policy and builds the ecosystem around the sector, including driving education programmes and managing the base_camp incubator space. Its education work includes a Student Placement Programme and other education initiatives, which aim to link students with the industry. Its website also carries publications, a media centre and information on events, so visitors can follow what is happening in the sector.

It also tracks emerging trends and challenges so that Malta's gaming community has the knowledge, training and tools to stay ahead. The foundation works with Malta Enterprise on foreign direct investment attraction, and with Tech.mt and Finance Malta as the promotional bodies for their sectors. For wider context on the finance side of the economy, see our financial services in Malta guide.

Strategy and leadership

The foundation aligns its work with Malta's Envision 2050 strategy, which treats gaming as one of the pillars of national growth. Its stated priorities are a respected national brand, support for growing firms, industry insight, closer links between stakeholders, and preparing the sector for what comes next.

Ivan Filletti has served as chief executive since 2016. He holds a Master's degree in Knowledge-Based Entrepreneurship from the University of Malta, chairs the government backed iGaming Council, and received the SIGMA Outstanding Contribution to the Gaming Sector award in 2018. Alistair Dalli is the chairman.
