IK Tennis Academy is a tennis and padel coaching academy for children and adults, founded in Malta by former professional player Ivana Kubickova. It teaches beginners as young as three, trains competitive juniors, and offers lessons and court booking to adults and visitors who simply want to play. The academy is listed at Triq Wied Għollieqa in San Ġwann, and it coaches at courts in several parts of the island rather than from a single site.
On VisitMalta.co.uk it appears in our directory of tennis in Malta, where you can compare it with other clubs and courts.
The academy and its founder
Ivana Kubickova grew up in Brno in the Czech Republic and played tennis competitively from a young age. She went on to take up a tennis scholarship at Kansas State University in 2012, then returned to the Czech Republic and later moved to Malta to coach. She set up Tennisline Academy Malta in 2016 and opened IK Tennis Academy in 2018, with a focus on young players moving from first lessons towards competition.
Its players have won more than 50 junior national tournaments since 2016, and it has about ten professional coaches. Its approach combines technical coaching with fitness work and mental coaching, and the aim is to build good people as well as good players. Not every pupil is expected to compete: there are programmes for local and international players who only want to learn the game and enjoy it.
Coaching programmes
Coaching runs all year and is organised by level. Kids Tennis starts from age three for complete beginners. Pro Juniors is for players over eight and is offered according to ability and commitment, with fitness sessions added for children who want to progress faster along the competition pathway. Adult Tennis Training covers players who want to improve or start the game later in life.
An International Programme is open to players aged 12 to 21 and is run by the academy's more experienced coaches. You can also book a private or semi-private lesson, or ask the academy to place you in a group that suits your level and timetable. Registration pages exist for kids and for adults, and the academy runs tournaments and events through the year.
The coaching team
The academy has around ten qualified coaches. Lionel Devigny, the head coach, has more than 25 years of coaching behind him, trained with the French Tennis Federation and worked at Patrick Mouratoglou's first academy in Paris. Omar Sudzuka, a senior Pro Juniors coach, is a former Malta national team player who represented the country in the Davis Cup, and Federico Rella is a senior coach for kids and adults who studied sports science at the University of Messina.
Younger coaches include Maria, who is from Kyiv and holds a psychology degree that informs how she coaches, Luigi, who is Maltese, and Halis, who studied sports sciences in Turkey and holds a national coaching certificate from the Malta Tennis Federation.
Courts and booking
Players book courts through the Playtomic app or the booking pages on the academy's own site. The tennis venues named include Urban Valley Resort and Spa in Kappara, Villa Bologna in Attard, Madliena Heights, St Martin's College in Swatar, and Salini Resort in Salina. Padel courts are listed at Pembroke Gardens, Manoel Island in Gżira, Luxol in Pembroke and IK Padel in Lija.
Some venues have a particular character. Villa Bologna is one of Malta's historic villas, the Salini court looks over Salini Bay and the Mediterranean, and the courts at Wied Għollieqa sit in a nature reserve. The St Martin's College courts are available after school hours only. If you are planning a holiday around playing, our where to stay in Malta guide and the Malta weather guide will help you choose an area and a season, and our things to do in Malta page covers what else to fit in.
Families and newcomers
Because the academy teaches from early childhood upwards and coaches at many venues, it suits families who have moved to the island as well as holidaymakers. If you are planning a longer stay, our Malta relocation guide explains the practical side of settling in. To ask about lessons, a programme or a court, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message to the academy.
