INTERSPAR Hamrun

Ħamrun is one of the most densely built towns on the island, tucked in beside Valletta, Marsa and Floriana, and INTERSPAR Hamrun is the big-format SPAR store on its main shopping street, St Joseph High Street. It is the hypermarket within the SPAR Malta network, built to act as a one-stop shop for food and non-food goods.

About SPAR and the INTERSPAR format

SPAR was founded in 1932 and is now the world's largest grocery chain. The name abbreviates a Dutch phrase meaning that everyone benefits from joint cooperation, and the idea is to bring wholesalers and retailers together to offer good prices without losing quality or freshness. The fir tree in the logo came from founder Adriaan Van Well.

SPAR operates in three formats. SPAR is the neighbourhood convenience store, EUROSPAR is a larger supermarket for the weekly family shop, and INTERSPAR is the hypermarket, the biggest format, which aims at the widest selection of both food and non-food items. The four founding values are fresh, quality, value and choice.

For a UK visitor, the practical meaning is a large, familiar-style supermarket where you can buy picnic food, wine, toiletries and household items in a single stop. Staff at the customer care office handle queries and suggestions, and the company welcomes feedback on its service.

What is on offer in store

Fresh food sits at the centre of the offer, with separate sections for the bakery, meat and fish, fruit and veg, Dairy World and a patisserie. Photographs of the store show wide aisles, a bakery counter, a butchery and produce stands piled with fruit.

Online delivery and what it costs

The online shop delivers to all localities in Malta, though Gozo and Comino are excluded. Goods travel in temperature-controlled vehicles, and orders are brought between 8am and 12 noon, 12 noon and 3pm or 3pm and 7pm, Monday to Saturday. There are no Sunday or public holiday deliveries.

The minimum order is €70. A delivery charge of €5 applies from €70 to €79.99, and delivery is free from €80. For safety, deliveries are made to ground floor level only. Loose items such as fruit, vegetables, meat and poultry are charged at the weight actually picked, so the final total may differ slightly from your basket and a second card payment may be needed. You can tick a box to accept replacements for anything out of stock, though a replacement may cost more or less than the original. Notes on the order must be written in English, and the company tries to deliver in your chosen slot but cannot guarantee it every time.

Rewards card and weekly deals

SPAR Malta runs the INTERSPAR and EUROSPAR Rewards Card, and publishes flyer deals and outlet deals for these stores. The group also operates more than a dozen smaller SPAR shops across the island, from Valletta and Sliema to Mellieħa, Rabat and Marsaxlokk.
