La Salumeria is a small family business in the heart of Ħamrun whose aim is to bring authentic Italian products straight to the table. A salumeria is the Italian word for a shop that sells cured meats, and here it comes with cheese, pasta, coffee, wine and a counter of products that are sliced fresh each day. Everything is chosen by the owners and imported directly from Italy.

The shop is part of our directory of delicatessens in Malta. It stands on Pjazza Kappillan Muscat in Ħamrun, one of the busy towns just outside Valletta, so it is easy to combine with a visit to the capital described in our Valletta guide.

Where the shop began

The business grew out of a passion for Italian food. The first plan was to import and distribute carefully selected products from Italy. While the owners were fitting out their office, they realised the space could become something more, and they opened the doors to the public while continuing the distribution work. That is why the shelves feel like a trader's selection rather than a general grocery.

Every item is personally selected by the owners. Three ideas sum up the approach: products come direct from Italian farms, recipes and methods stay authentic, and meats are sliced fresh each day.

Cured meats, cheeses and pantry goods

The headline products show the character of the shop. Finocchiona is a soft Tuscan salami flavoured with fennel seed. The mortadella is the classic Bologna style with pistachios. Crudo Truffle is prosciutto crudo infused with black truffle, and the porchetta is Porchetta di Ariccia, herb-roasted and slow-cooked pork. For cheese there is fresh creamy burrata from Puglia and Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP.

Slicing to order matters with cured meats, because thin slices taste better soon after cutting and you can ask for exactly the amount you need for a picnic or a dinner for two. Beyond the counter the shop imports pasta, coffee, taralli (small Italian savoury rings), wines and specialty jarred products. The owners take special care over cheeses from Northern Italy, Tuscany and Sardinia. For a self-catering holiday, a board of finocchiona, burrata and a bottle of wine is an easy way to bring a taste of Italy into a rented flat.

Wine and aperitivi

La Salumeria stocks a curated list of Italian wines, from everyday bottles to special reserves, with bottles from Friuli, Veneto and Trentino and premium reds for special occasions. Wine is available on tap, by the bottle or to take home, and the tap wine is priced to be fresh and affordable.

In the evening the shop serves Italian aperitivi, the pre-dinner custom of a drink and a snack. Expect a spritz, Prosecco and taglieri, which are boards of cured meats and cheeses. Tables for one to eight or more people can be booked, with start times of 17:00, 17:30, 18:00 or 18:30.
