Malta University Language School, often shortened to MULS, teaches English and other languages on the University of Malta campus in Msida. It was founded in 1972 and is owned and validated by the university, a link that appears on the end-of-course certificate. For UK adults who like the idea of studying among university students rather than in a resort, the setting is the main selling point.

The school sits at Campus Hub, right next to the campus, with good public transport connections and shopping centres close by. It is listed in our directory of language schools in Malta, where you can also compare AM Language for a different style of course.

English courses for adults

General English runs weekly at every level from Elementary to Advanced and develops speaking, reading, writing and listening, with extra conversation classes to build fluency. Intensive English adds more hours, and an early bird offer gives 10 per cent off Intensive English in summer 2027. General and Business English are also available, and a Combination course pairs a morning General English class with an extra lesson of one-to-one tuition or specialised English, or with Business English given privately or in a group.

Exam candidates can prepare for IELTS Academic or General Training, TOEFL and the Cambridge exams, including FCE, CAE and CPE, as a one-to-one course. One-to-one tuition can also be tailored to your own goals and interests, and there is an English for Beginners course for people with little or no English. Students planning to join the University of Malta as visiting students can take a preparatory English course.

Teachers are Cambridge-qualified, with CELTA and DELTA holders on the team, and use a communicative, interactive approach. Because the school is on campus, students mix with international university students, many of them native English speakers.

Teens, teachers, online and corporate courses

Teen summer camps run in July and August as two-week programmes that combine English lessons, on-campus accommodation and activities. Revision classes for teens are also offered, as are Italian courses for children aged 9 to 12 and teenagers aged 13 to 16.

Teachers and school staff can join English language development and digital skills courses, with levels from A1 to B2, and the school's courses are eligible for Erasmus+ funding. Online courses cover General English, one-to-one tuition and beginner courses in Maltese, Italian, Spanish, French, Arabic and Japanese, which can be useful if you are thinking about relocating to Malta from the UK and want to pick up some Maltese. Companies can arrange corporate employee training.

Msida, accommodation and free time

The school aims to respect each learner as an individual, place students in the right class and put welfare and customer care first, within a safe, multicultural setting. It also offers online Italian and other short evening courses, and it publishes a student handbook and terms and conditions for new arrivals.

Msida is centrally placed, so you can reach every part of the island by bus. Students who book accommodation with the school can practise English with residents at the university residence, and options include home stay and a hotel. A winter offer on rooms at Campus Hub applies from 12 December to 9 January. If you prefer to arrange your own stay, see our guide to hotels in Sliema and St Julian's.

Evenings and weekends are for exploring: our Valletta city guide, Gozo island guide, things to do in Malta and best beaches in Malta are good places to start. Check the Malta weather guide and flights to Malta when you plan your dates.
