Mediatrix Dental Clinic is a family run dental practice that has looked after patients in Malta since 1976. It began as a one dentist clinic in the heart of Żabbar and has grown into one of the largest dental practices on the island, with its own dental technology laboratory on site. This page covers the Qormi clinic at 10 Ġuze Duca Street, which belongs to the same practice as the original Żabbar premises.

For a UK visitor or resident, the practice offers a wide range of care under one roof, from check-ups and cleaning to implants, orthodontics and oral surgery, with a team of dentists and dental hygienists who work together. It is listed in our directory of dentists in Malta, and the information below describes the services on offer rather than giving any medical advice.

From a Żabbar practice to a multi-clinic group

Mediatrix started more than forty years ago as a small clinic run by Dr Vincent Gauci. The practice proved so popular that it soon outgrew its premises, so he bought a second building, joined it to the first and saw patients every day until late in the evening.

His son, Dr Chris, joined in 2001, and the clinic went through a major refurbishment with new surgeries, new sterilisation and X-ray equipment and a fresh look. In 2006 Dr Robert, the younger son of Dr Vince, and his future wife Dr Pamela joined as family specialists. As the practice kept growing it expanded from three treatment clinics to seven, and four more dentists and two dental hygienists joined the team. That size allows the practice to offer timely treatment as well as emergency dental care.

The Żabbar site is also close to the Three Cities, so a visitor staying on that side of the harbour can read our Three Cities guide to plan the rest of the day around an appointment. The practice's ethos is to put the patient first: the aim is to explain each treatment in detail, answer questions and care for people in the gentlest way.

Dental services explained

Diagnostic, preventive and routine dentistry covers the everyday side of looking after your teeth, such as oral examinations, X-rays, cleaning, sealants and fluoride treatments. Cosmetic and restorative dentistry is listed as its own service, for patients who want to improve the look or repair the shape of their teeth.

Crowns and bridges are fixed ways of replacing or protecting teeth. A crown is placed over a remaining natural tooth, and a bridge joins a false tooth between crowned natural teeth. For people who need removable replacements, the practice also provides denture prosthetics, and the on-site laboratory supports this kind of work.

Oral implantology covers dental implants, which are surgical components that sit in the jawbone to support a crown, bridge, denture or other prosthesis. The practice has a 3D CBCT scanner, a three dimensional X-ray machine used in implant placement, and few clinics on the island have one. Oral surgery covers any surgical procedure in or around the mouth and jaw, and orthodontics is the specialty that deals with correcting teeth and jaws that are out of position. Young patients have their own service, aimed at helping children keep healthy smiles.

The dental team

The principal dental surgeon and co-founder of Mediatrix Plus Clinics as they stand today is Dr Christian Gauci. He graduated from the University of Malta in 2001, worked in the government health service at St Luke's Hospital and in health centres while also working privately, and then specialised in implant dentistry. He holds a Master of Science in Oral Implantology from Goethe University in Frankfurt and belongs to the Dental Association of Malta and the Malta Association of Post-Graduate Dentistry.

Dr Ritienne Galdes graduated from the University of Malta in 2016 and holds a Master of Science in Endodontics, the field of root canal treatment, from King's College London, awarded with distinction. Dr Lucia Carini graduated in Italy in 2013 and is studying for a master's degree in orthodontics in Rome. Dr Eisle Baroni completed her dental degree in Valencia in 2012 and a master's degree in prosthodontics and dental aesthetics in Madrid in 2014. Dr Rucsandra Petre graduated in Bucharest in 1999 and has extensive experience in general dentistry and dental prosthetics.

The newer dentists include Dr Deborah Mifsud, a Master of Dental Surgery graduate of 2019 who cares particularly for children, Dr Katia Mizzi, a 2024 graduate of the University of Malta and a certified Invisalign provider, and Dr Ryan Camilleri, who graduated in 2025. Dr Luke Sciberras is also part of the dental team. Patients who feel nervous will find that several profiles stress a calm, gentle manner.

Hygienists, specialists and the pharmacy

Three dental hygienists work at Mediatrix. Jackie Schembri gained her diploma in 1992 and is a member of the Malta Association of Dental Hygienists. Roderick Azzopardi began as a dental assistant in 2015 and graduated as a dental hygienist from the University of Malta in 2019. Mariah Grixti graduated in dental hygiene from the University of Malta in 2023 after five years as a dental assistant.

Upstairs in the Żabbar clinics a number of visiting specialists work on a weekly or fortnightly basis. Their fields include sports and exercise medicine, gastroenterology, hepatology, cardiology, psychiatry with a special interest in eating disorders, nutrition, podiatry and physiotherapy. Since 2012 Mediatrix Pharmacy has served patients in Żabbar. All the clinics and amenities are accessible, and the lifts are wheelchair friendly.

What to expect as a patient

The ethos of the practice is patient first. It cares about patient satisfaction and aims to guide each person back to full oral health, with treatment explained in detail and questions welcome. Several dentists put nervous patients at ease, and the profiles of Dr Ritienne Galdes, Dr Eisle Baroni and Dr Katia Mizzi all mention a calm and reassuring approach.

Because the clinic has dentists with different training, one visit can lead naturally to another type of care. A patient who needs a root canal, an implant, braces or a children's check-up can be seen within the same practice, and the on-site laboratory means that crowns, bridges and dentures can be made without sending work far away. The practice also keeps capacity for emergency dental treatment.

The team is international. Dr Lucia Carini first came to Malta on the Leonardo project, a scheme that gives young professionals experience abroad, and decided to stay. Dr Rucsandra Petre trained in Romania and chose Malta partly for its swimming, and Dr Eisle Baroni trained in Spain.
