NAS, short for Naval Architectural Services, is a maritime consultancy based in the A3 Towers on M. Bologna Street in Paola. It brings naval architects, marine engineers, surveyors and designers under one roof, with a yachting branch in Antibes, France, and support centres in Athens and Istanbul. The firm was founded by Kurt Gutteridge and works on superyachts, commercial vessels, specialist vessels and fish farm vessels.

On VisitMalta.co.uk it is listed among the island's marina services in Malta. For yacht owners and buyers, its value is having one technical team that can design, survey, certify and manage a project from concept to completion.

Sectors and vessels served

NAS organises its work by vessel type. Superyachts are the most visible sector for UK owners and charter clients, but the firm also works on commercial vessels, specialist vessels and fish farm vessels, where Malta has a growing aquaculture industry. Its cumulative fleet of yachts surveyed or coded stands at around 44,000 tonnes of commercial yacht tonnage in service.

Malta is a leading flag for large yachts, and NAS has been part of that story from the regulatory side as well as the technical side. Its managing partner helped draft the first Malta Commercial Yacht Code while working for the flag administration, an experience that now informs advice to owners on coding, registration and compliance. If you are planning time on the water yourself, read about boat trips to the Blue Lagoon and the harbour history in our Vittoriosa guide.

Design, engineering and research

The design side covers functional workboats through to superyachts, taking in concept design, naval architecture and basic engineering. The engineering department, co-founded and led by partner Jean Paul Farrugia, handles structural design, stability analyses and the management of refit projects. To date the firm has been involved in 19 major refit projects, 18 ballast water treatment retrofits and 20 computational fluid dynamics projects, which model water flow over hulls, appendages and exhaust scrubbers.

A research, development and innovation department works with industry partners, universities and governments on a greener, safer and more sustainable maritime sector. The firm also acts as a technical owner's representative and flag surveyor on new builds, with 20 new vessels under construction in that role.

Survey and certification

Survey and certification is led by partners Gabriel Gauci and Jan Bonello, both appointed surveyors for the Maltese flag. The work includes flag surveys and certification, specialist yacht condition surveys, damage investigations and pre-purchase surveys on yachts and small craft, which matter to anyone buying a boat. NAS regularly codes yachts on behalf of the Malta flag, with 460 commercial yachts coded to date, and carries out independent valuations.

A service engineering team inspects and certifies loose gear, lifting gear, lifeboats, rescue boats, davits and offshore transfer baskets on merchant ships and yachts. If you are choosing a broker or a charter operator, see 73 Marine and Adventure Cruises Malta, and our featured partner CLA Malta also handles yacht registration.

The people behind NAS

Kurt Gutteridge, the managing partner and director, began as an engineer cadet on cargo ships and studied naval architecture and marine engineering at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Gabriel Gauci and Jan Bonello lead survey and certification as partners, Jean Paul Farrugia leads engineering, and Selmar Spijker heads newbuild design as senior associate.

Younger engineers, draughtsmen and a research assistant complete the team, along with service engineers who work aboard vessels calling at Maltese ports, shipyards and anchorages. For relocation questions for staff or owners moving to the island, see our Malta relocation guide.

Accreditation, team and offices

The firm's processes are audited under ISO 9001:2015, and it holds delegations, appointments and memberships with recognised industry bodies. The team is international and includes engineers, designers, a research assistant and service engineers, many trained at the University of Malta, MCAST and universities in the UK, Italy and the Netherlands.
