Norman's Pharmacy stands at 133 High Street in Sliema, in the middle of the town's main shopping area. It is a member of the JV Pharma family of pharmacies and offers dispensing, simple health checks at the counter and a doctor's surgery that runs on weekday late mornings. Visitors can find it in the directory pages for pharmacies in Malta and health centres in Malta.
This page sets out what the pharmacy does, when it opens and how to reach it. The information concerns services and is not medical guidance, so speak to the pharmacist or a doctor about anything affecting your own health.
Services at the counter
Three checks are performed by the pharmacist on site: blood pressure, blood glucose and urine. They take only a few minutes, need no lengthy preparation and are meant to give customers a reading they can share with their doctor. Anyone living in Malta long term, or relocating from the UK, may find a regular check handy while still getting established with a local GP.
Norman's also takes part in the Pharmacy of Your Choice scheme. Under POYC, people with long-term conditions are entitled to free medicines and devices through the Maltese government, collected from the pharmacy they register with. Registration is arranged through the scheme's offices, after a consultant or approved doctor has assessed the patient, and Norman's can be named as the collection point.
A walk-in doctor in the pharmacy
Unlike many clinics, the general practitioner who attends Norman's, Dr Victor Buhagiar, sees patients without an appointment on weekdays between 11:30 and 13:00. It is the only session at this branch that does not need booking. For anything outside that window, or for a different kind of specialist, ask the team what can be arranged.
For a visitor, a branch on a main street means that a question about a product, a travel mishap or a replacement item can be handled without a trek out of town. Ask the team what they stock and what can be ordered in.
The managing pharmacist is Ruth Fiorentino, who values building a relationship with each patient and giving first-hand advice. Her team aims to help each patient in the best way possible, which is a reassuring approach if you are new to the island and unsure how its health services fit together.
Hours and High Street
Norman's Pharmacy opens Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 20:00 and on Saturday from 08:00 to 19:00. It does not open on Sundays, when a rota of duty pharmacies covers the island.
High Street runs through one of Sliema's busiest streets, with cafés and shops close at hand. Many visitors stay in the area, and our Sliema hotels page lists options, while where to stay in Malta compares other bases. The pharmacy is only a short walk from the quays where Adventure Cruises Malta operates. The ferry across the harbour takes you to the Valletta guide destination, and the Malta weather guide helps you decide what to pack for sun and sea.
The JV Pharma group
JV Pharma began in 1991 when pharmacist Jojo Grima bought a single pharmacy in Swieqi. Its network grew through the 2000s, a wholesale licence followed in 2004 and a larger warehouse in Lija opened in 2008. The related company JV Healthcare imports pharmaceutical products for the Maltese market. The group marked thirty years in 2021 and today manages pharmacies throughout Malta and Gozo, with a pool of visiting healthcare professionals at its sites.
For ideas once you have what you need, see our things to do in Malta page. If a health query is about eating well rather than medicines, the directory also lists A New Better Life, a nutritionist.
