Online TEFL Teacher

Online TEFL Teacher is a small training provider linked to Malta's English language teaching sector. Rather than running classroom courses in a school building, it offers online learning for people who want to start teaching English to speakers of other languages or who want to keep developing once they have started. The business is registered in Żebbuġ, a town in the west of the island, and is listed in our directory of language schools in Malta.

The aim is simple: to introduce you to the English Language Teaching (ELT) profession and to give you the support you need to keep evolving. For a UK reader, ELT is the industry term for teaching English as a foreign or second language, and it covers everything from private tutoring to teaching in a language school such as AM Language.

The TEFL Award Level 4 course

The flagship offer is the Online TEFL Course, which is presented as a TEFL Award Level 4 qualification and led by Alan Marsh. TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and a certificate of this kind is what many schools look for when they recruit teachers, so it is worth checking the requirements of the schools or countries where you hope to work before you enrol. The course is taught online, with a video on the website explaining what it involves and a page listing upcoming course dates.

Because the course is online, it suits people with a day job, parents, or anyone planning to teach from home or overseas. Anyone thinking of working remotely from the island can also read our digital nomad guide for Malta.

The TELT preparation course

The second offer is an Online Self-Study TELT Preparation Course. Because it is self-study, you can work through the material at your own pace rather than following a fixed timetable. A video on the website introduces the course content.

This format is useful if you want to prepare in your own time before moving to Malta, and our guide to relocating to Malta from the UK explains how that move works in practice.

Who it suits and what to expect

Courses of this kind usually suit people considering a career change into teaching, graduates who want to teach abroad for a year or two, and existing teachers who want to refresh their methods. An online course lets you fit study around work and family, and because Malta is one hour ahead of the UK, any scheduled sessions are easy to plan around for British learners.

The website does not publish fees, course lengths or entry requirements, so these are best confirmed with the business directly. Ask about the next start date, whether a certificate is issued at the end, how much time to set aside each week, and how the course is assessed before you commit.

Support for teachers and more on the site

Beyond the two courses, the website carries a blog with news, lesson ideas and opinion, a documentation section and tutorial videos for ELT instructors. These resources are aimed at teachers who want fresh classroom ideas as well as those still training.

If your trip to Malta is for study, you can combine online learning with a visit. Our guides to things to do in Malta, the Valletta city guide and the best beaches in Malta cover the sights, while the Malta weather guide and flights to Malta help you plan dates. Our guide to hotels in Malta lists places to stay.
