Phoenicia Spa & Wellness is the spa of The Phoenicia Malta, the grand luxury hotel that stands on The Mall in Floriana, at the gates of Valletta. It spreads over 1,200 square metres on two floors and mixes modern therapies with an unusual historic setting. It is a short walk from the capital's main bus terminal and from Valletta itself, so it suits visitors who want a serious spa treatment in between sightseeing. Treatments are booked in advance, and the spa pages list a long menu so you can plan a visit around the time you have.
The spa was named Best Spa Hotel at the International Hotel Awards for the 2024 to 2025 season. It sits among the other spas in Malta in our directory, and the Valletta guide shows what is nearby.
A spa built around a fortification wall
The spa's setting is its signature. During excavations, builders uncovered one of Valletta's original 16th-century fortification walls, built by the Knights of St John. The plans were redrawn and the spa was reshaped around this piece of history, so the wall now forms the backdrop to the indoor pool. If the story of the island's defenders interests you, our Knights of Malta guide explains who built the city.
Spa facilities include an indoor pool, a sauna, a Himalayan salt room and a steam room. There is also a fully equipped fitness room, which suits early risers and late-night lifters alike, with cardio machines, free weights and a studio space used for classes and personal training, and the spa offers a Moonlight Swim for couples, where the pool, sauna, salt room and steam room are reserved for two people for two hours with champagne and a seasonal fruit platter, for €500.
Massages
The core massage menu has three signature styles. The Phoenicia Signature blends hot stone, deep tissue and awakening bamboo techniques with aromatic oils, at €165 for 50 minutes or €195 for 80 minutes. Muscle Recovery uses deep movements and stretching on areas of concern, at €125 or €145. The Harmonizing massage is soft and slow, aimed at immediate relaxation, at €105 for 50 minutes or €130 for 80 minutes.
A second group brings treatments from around the world. A Hot Stones Body Massage with warm volcanic stones costs €125 for 50 minutes or €150 for 80 minutes. The Awakening Bamboo Massage, in which bamboo is used to roll and knead the muscles, costs €145 or €170, and the Himalayan Salt Stone Massage costs the same. Foot Reflexology, a pressure point massage along the meridians of the feet, costs €115 for 50 minutes. The Himalayan Salt Stone Massage uses heated stones and costs the same as the bamboo massage, so it is worth asking the therapist which of the two suits you better on the day.
Couples can book the Couples Duo, with aromatherapy oils, at €240 for 50 minutes or €290 for 80 minutes. Expectant mothers have a dedicated Mummy to Be massage at €115 or €135, using a pregnancy oil blend, and anyone with a health condition should tell the spa when booking so the treatment can be adapted. Muscle Recovery and the hot stone massage are good picks after a long walk around Valletta's hills and stairs.
Facials and skin technology
The spa uses Korres, a Greek natural skincare brand, for its facial and body treatments. Options include the Golden Krocus Total Anti-Ageing Treatment, based on saffron, at €90 for 50 minutes, the Greek Yoghurt Hydrating and Nourishing Treatment at €70, the Wild Rose Brightening Treatment at €75, and the Black Pine Lifting and Firming Treatment at €85. The 80 minute version of each of these four costs €130, and a 110 minute version costs €185. Korres also has a White Pine Meno-Reverse treatment, designed around the skin's needs during and after the menopause, at €85 for 50 minutes.
For a data-led approach, the VISIA skin analysis (30 minutes, €75) images the skin and measures features such as lines, pores and pigmentation, and the results shape the treatment plan. The spa also offers JetPeel treatments, which use a fine jet of air and active ingredients without needles, and Feather Touch facials. JetPeel sessions start at €129 for a teen version and rise to €399 for the First Class treatment. These are cosmetic services, not medical advice or treatment. The VISIA analysis also measures what the spa calls your TrueSkinAge, and it is used to build a skin plan for you. The spa's skincare partner also supplies home-care products, including the tHermoCEUTICAL range, chosen to suit what the analysis shows, so you can continue your routine after you fly home. Feather Touch facials, at €189 for 50 minutes and €219 for 80 minutes, use a technology that places active ingredients into the skin.
Hands, feet, waxing and gentlemen's care
Beauty services cover manicures and pedicures. A Classic Manicure takes 60 minutes at €55, a Classic Pedicure €65, and the semi-permanent versions cost €65 and €70. Waxing is priced by area, from €20 for an underarm or an eyebrow shape to €55 for a full leg.
There is also a dedicated gentlemen's section, with a facial for sensitive male skin at €125 for 80 minutes, a simple manicure at €50, a pedicure at €65 and waxing for the chest, abdomen, back, legs and arms. Waxing for gentlemen is also offered, from €45 for the chest, abdomen or an arm, to €55 for the back and €70 for the legs. Enhancements include a Jet Lag Recovery foot and leg treatment (€85), a Calming Head Massage (€50), body exfoliation (€75) and a detox body wrap (€65).
Exclusive experiences and spa entry
Longer rituals are designed as a treat for a special occasion. King of the Day takes two hours and combines a body scrub, a Harmonizing body massage and an express face treatment for €225. Queen of the Day, at €235, offers a wild rose scrub, a hot lava stone massage and a Korres face treatment. All About Us is a two-hour couples experience at €350, with a chocolate body wrap and calming head massage, followed by a Himalayan salt stone massage.
If you simply want to use the facilities, spa entry for two hours is €40. That makes it a modest way to enjoy the pool, sauna, salt room and steam room if you are in Valletta for the day. Pre-booking is required, so reserve ahead rather than turning up on the day. Spa entry is also a benefit for guests who book directly with the hotel, subject to pre-booking.
