Pisani Motoring School teaches people to drive in Malta, whether you are a first-time learner, a mature student or a UK driver who has settled on the island and now needs a Maltese licence. The school works from an office on Triq Il-Għasel in Mosta, the town beneath the great domed church that sits close to the old capital described in our Mdina guide.

The school reports more than 15 years of teaching and roughly 10,000 students taught. It appears in our directory of driving schools in Malta, where you can compare it with other local options.

Lessons, cars and licence categories

Every lesson is one to one and shaped around the individual learner, with a minimum length of one hour. You choose between automatic and manual, and the school uses petrol and diesel cars including the Toyota Yaris Hybrid, Ford Fiesta and Toyota Starlet. The cars have power steering, air conditioning, electric windows, ABS and full dual controls, and on test day you drive the same car you practised in.

Beyond cars, the school teaches motorcycles for Category A and trucks for Category C. Pick-up and drop-off points are free and can be set wherever suits you, which is handy if you are staying in a rented flat in a tourist area and have read our where to stay in Malta overview to choose your base. Mock tests are run before the real thing so that you know what to expect.

Fees printed for car lessons

Car lesson prices depend on the time of day. From Monday to Friday a lesson costs €21 between 7am and 4pm, €24 between 4pm and 7pm and €28 between 7pm and 11pm. On Saturdays it is €24 from 6am to 2pm and €28 from 2pm to 10pm. A fee applies if you do not cancel at least four hours before the lesson.

Other costs are paid separately. The student permit application costs €23.25 to Transport Malta, student insurance cover costs €80 to the school, the theory test fee is €30.25, and the school charges €100 for the practical test, or €120 if it is held on a Saturday. A retest costs €50, and if you cause an accident on test day you pay an insurance excess of €250.

Permits, test day and how long it takes

You must hold a student permit before you can learn with any Maltese school, and it lets you learn for three years. You also sign an agreement with the school, and you speak for yourself if you are over 18. On average students need about 30 hours of lessons, though the school stresses that everybody learns at their own pace.

The car practical test lasts around 45 minutes. Bring your glasses if you wear them and a valid ID card, as otherwise you will need a retest. Transport Malta expects instructors and learners to dress presentably, so shorts, short skirts, sandals and flip-flops are not allowed. If you are weighing up a longer stay, our guide to relocating to Malta covers the wider move.

Languages, vouchers and switching schools

Lessons can be translated into Italian and Arabic, and a translator can sit with you for the theory test in Maltese, English, Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, Croatian, Hindi, Italian, Macedonian, Montenegrin, Punjabi, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Turkish or Urdu. Maltese and English are free, and any other language costs €45. Gift vouchers are available at €25, €50 and €100, which suit a birthday present for a new driver.

If you already learn with another school, you tell that school first and then the new one, and the new school charges €80 for the office work. Remote workers settling in will find more in our digital nomad guide, and our Malta weather guide helps when planning lesson dates around summer heat.

Visiting the office and getting started

The office is on Triq Il-Għasel in Mosta, which is an easy drive from Valletta and the coast, and visitors arriving from the UK can check our flights to Malta page for routes. New students are asked to come to the office to meet the school owner and sign up. If you need a break from the books, our list of things to do in Malta gives ideas for days off, and the about Malta page explains the island setting.
