Services, hours and details last checked against Scuba Kings Gozo's own published information.

Scuba Kings Gozo is a family-run PADI and BSAC dive centre on the seafront at Marsalforn, on the north coast of Gozo. It offers try dives, PADI courses from beginner to Divemaster and technical levels, guided and organised diving, equipment hire and diving holidays. Enquiries go through the VisitMalta.co.uk form on this page.

Scuba Kings Gozo is a PADI and BSAC dive centre on the seafront at Marsalforn, a small resort on the north coast of Gozo. It is a good fit for UK visitors who want to try diving for the first time, finish an Open Water certificate on holiday, or book guided dives in an island known for caves, caverns and wrecks. The centre also looks after groups, qualified divers who want to dive independently, and technical divers.

Gozo itself is small, so most dive sites are within about ten minutes of the centre, and if the wind blows from one side there is usually a sheltered site on the other. Everything at Scuba Kings is arranged around that convenience, with a shop, kit storage and the water all in one place. On VisitMalta.co.uk the centre is listed among our dive centres in Malta and our diving equipment suppliers.

A family-run centre on the seafront

The centre is run by an English family. Richie King is Director of Diving and a PADI Staff Instructor and BSAC Instructor. The team also includes Mick Sutcliffe, a PADI Staff, Tec and BSAC Instructor, and the PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainers Jennifer Young, Marco and Luciano Sabbatini.

The whole operation sits on the seafront, which means divers can walk straight into the bay for try dives, training and night dives. Customers are welcome to leave wetsuits and fins at the shop between dives. Divers are never hurried before a dive, free drinking water is handed out, the dive trucks run on 50% biodiesel and plastic is collected from the sea for recycling.

For a UK visitor Gozo feels familiar: English is widely spoken, traffic drives on the left and the pace of life is slow. Our Gozo guide covers the island beyond the dive sites.

Try dives and learning to dive

A try dive is the simplest way to start. It begins with a short briefing of about half an hour, then you are kitted out and build up in small steps in shallow water before swimming out to a maximum depth of 6 metres. There are never more than two customers per member of staff. The price is €55 for one person or €50 each for two, and a second dive at a different site can be added. Children from the age of 10 can take PADI courses, and an eight-year-old can do a one-to-one bubble maker experience for €35 to a depth of 2 metres.

Discover Scuba Diving goes a little further, with theory, four basic skills in shallow water and a dive to a maximum of 12 metres. It costs €60 for one person or €55 each for two, and the fee is deducted if you continue to a full course. The PADI Scuba Diver course takes two days and costs €330 for one person. The full PADI Open Water Diver course takes three to four days, is priced at €450 for one person, €429 each for two and €419 each for four, and includes e-learning, certification and equipment. Study the e-learning at home and your holiday time is spent in the water.

The centre puts extra staff on early dives and stresses good buoyancy from the start. If you do not finish a course on holiday you have up to a year to return and complete it at no extra cost. If you already hold a PADI qualification, bring your certification card and log book.

Courses for qualified divers

Once you are certified, the course list is long. Adventure Diver is €260 and Advanced Open Water is €360, with options such as deep, navigation, night, wreck and underwater imaging. Rescue Diver is €369 and Emergency First Response, open to non-divers, is €130. Specialities include Nitrox at €160, Deep Diver at €270, Wreck Diver at €340 and Peak Performance Buoyancy at €100. Divemaster is the first professional level, takes three to four weeks and costs €700.

Wreck diving is a particular draw on Gozo. The island has three wrecks, and the centre can also take divers by boat to the P31, the P29, the tug Rozi and Popeye's Barge, with a boat supplement and a minimum number of six divers. The centre is also a BSAC training centre and can sign off depth progressions for BSAC divers with the club leader's permission.

Guided diving, organised diving and kit hire

Qualified divers can book guided dive packs. A single guided dive with air, weights, transport and a guide is €45 for one person, and a ten-dive pack falls to €340 each for four divers. With full equipment hire a single dive is €55. Groups average four customers per guide. Guided days meet at 9am for two dives and are back before 3pm, while a single dive meets at 3pm. Every visiting diver does a check dive first, which is a standard safety step at professional centres on the island.

Experienced divers who prefer to plan their own dive can use organised diving. The centre provides transport, a briefing, first aid and oxygen cover, and you dive without a guide underwater. You need to be PADI Advanced, BSAC Sports Diver or equivalent. Night dives cost an extra €5, a nitrox fill is €6 and an all-day boat dive with lunch is €50. Full scuba kit hire is available by the day or per dive, along with cylinders, cameras and snorkelling packs, which suits anyone arriving without their own gear. Guests with their own equipment can find nearby suppliers such as Atlantis Gozo Diving Centre, and freedivers might try Apnea Total Malta.

Groups, clubs and independent divers

Gozo suits club trips, and the centre welcomes BSAC and other club groups. Experienced divers can rent tanks and dive unguided, or choose organised diving with transport to the sites and a briefing, which works much like a Red Sea liveaboard without the boat. Groups who book together receive discounts on courses and dive packs, and a course can be run just for you if none is scheduled at a convenient time.

Unaccompanied rental packs suit divers with their own transport. You can follow the trucks to guided sites and listen to the briefing for an extra €5 per dive, and the centre can supply dive site maps, risk assessments and emergency plans. Washing, drying and kit storage are available, and you can have a key to collect and return tanks when it suits you. Divers qualified to Advanced level or higher on a six or ten dive pack can dive unguided in the bay in front of the centre for €5 per cylinder.

Technical diving

For divers who want to go deeper, the centre teaches PADI technical courses. Discover Tec is a half-day introduction to double tanks, a wing BCD and stage decompression tanks for €100 per person based on two people, to a maximum depth of 10 metres. Tec 40 is €375 and Tec 45 is €475, based on two people, and Tec 50 is €500. The Tec Deep Diver programme runs for eight to nine days and 12 dives at €1100, and courses are also offered in trimix, sidemount and cavern diving. Each course lists its own prerequisites, including logged dive numbers and a minimum age of 18.

Diving holidays and when to come

Diving holidays start from €295 for seven nights and eight dives, and Learn to Dive holidays start from €519 for five nights including a course. Our guides to hotels in Gozo and where to stay in Malta will help you choose a base. UK visitors can start with our flights to Malta page, then take the X1 bus and ferry to Gozo.

Water temperature shapes what you pack. A 7 mm suit or a dry suit is advised from December to the end of April, a 7 mm wetsuit from May, and a 5 mm suit from July to September. A fleece or windcheater is useful between dives, and warm clothes for the evenings. Check our Malta weather guide to plan the right month. If you are combining diving with a boat day, the Blue Lagoon on Comino is easy to reach from Gozo.

To ask about a course, a dive pack or a holiday, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message to the centre.
