Tech.mt is a public-private partnership created in 2019 by the Government of Malta and the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry to promote Malta as a technology hub. It is based at the AM Business Centre in Żejtun, supports tech companies and runs education and community projects. Enquiries go through the VisitMalta.co.uk form on this page.
Tech.mt is not a conventional company. It is a public-private partnership set up to tell the world that Malta is a serious place for technology, and to help Maltese tech firms grow beyond a small domestic market. Its tagline is Malta Leading Through Innovation, and it works to promote the Malta Digital Innovation Technology Strategy, the national plan for the sector.
Tech.mt operates from the AM Business Centre in Żejtun, in the south-east of the island. For UK founders, investors and professionals weighing up a move, it is a useful organisation to know about, and on VisitMalta.co.uk it appears in our directory of corporate services in Malta.
A partnership between government and business
Tech.mt was established in 2019 by the Government of Malta together with the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry. That joint origin matters, because it gives the organisation a foot in both the public policy world and the commercial one. Its role is to push the island's reputation as a centre for innovative technologies, and to help the sector reach the next stage of its growth.
One stated aim is to open the sales channels that Maltese firms need to export information and communications technology, presenting Malta as a country that delivers quality and creativity. Another is to attract international conferences on important technology topics and to make it easier for new ideas to be tried out here. Together these goals are meant to raise the value of Malta's ICT industry as a whole.
The wider backdrop is a sector that has grown quickly, from software and fintech to gaming. Our guides to iGaming in Malta and financial services in Malta show how technology already underpins two of the island's biggest industries.
Four objectives: promote, innovate, talent, assist
Tech.mt organises its work around four objectives. The first, promote, means taking part in local and international symposia so that Maltese tech companies have a stage on which to show their work and celebrate their successes.
The second, innovate, is about exposing technology professionals to new technology and driving academic research, and then making sure the results are seen by the right audiences. The third, talent, aims to build a two-way channel between local and foreign universities, so that areas of collaboration can be identified and turned into clear paths that benefit everyone involved.
The fourth, assist, covers practical guidance. Tech.mt provides market intelligence through market research and published market reports, shares information about incentives for prospective tech investors, and offers mentoring and coaching to help tech businesses develop. Anyone considering a corporate structure in Malta can read our guide to the Malta corporate tax structure for context, though this page describes what Tech.mt offers and is not tax advice.
Support for tech companies and investors
For companies already based in Malta, Tech.mt helps them to grow through internationalisation and by encouraging collaboration both locally and globally. It also backs participation in global conferences and events, promoting Malta as a reliable, forward-looking tech hub. Its website carries photographs from London Tech Week in June 2025, where a Malta stand drew crowds in the exhibition hall.
For foreign investors, the case Tech.mt makes is that Malta has a highly skilled workforce and that almost the whole island communicates in English, which removes a barrier when attracting foreign direct investment or exporting technology skills. Malta is also a full member of the European Union, so firms based here operate inside the single market.
The organisation presents a three-part offer: what it provides, what it does in Malta and what it does outside Malta. In Malta it places a special focus on human resources to aid growth in IT and technology. Beyond Malta it acts as a springboard for local firms to build relationships with international partners. If you are a UK professional thinking about working in the sector, our Malta relocation guide and digital nomad guide are good places to start, and flights from the UK are covered in our flights to Malta page.
Education and licensing
Tech.mt is licensed as a Further Education Institution by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority, under licence number 2022-005. It is licensed to deliver further education programmes at its Żejtun address and online through its eLearning portal.
The organisation also works with universities. It promotes Malta at foreign fairs, conferences and educational institutions, and it has a link to a cooperation agreement on technology innovation between Maltese and Italian universities. Among its key initiatives are partnering with education institutions to develop tech talent and improve science, technology, engineering and maths and IT curricula, exploring new specialisations in digital and creative technologies, encouraging young people to play a part in the digital economy and supporting emerging fields.
Students are part of the vision as well. The website encourages STEM students at local universities to build on their ideas for a next project or a tech start-up, and to find strategic partnerships with industry.
Events and conferences
Events are one of the ways Tech.mt gives Maltese technology a public profile. The Valletta Tech Summit is a conference and exhibition held every two years, bringing international and national speakers, exhibitors and attendees together, with the aim of putting Malta on the map for technology. Visitors who attend can combine it with time in the capital, and our Valletta guide explains how to make the most of the city.
Earlier events include ZEST, a digital innovation event for Malta-based tech start-ups and digital businesses that attracts founders, chief executives, investors, talent, influencers and support professionals. The Malta Cloud Forum aimed to promote the take-up of cloud computing, especially among micro organisations and small and medium-sized businesses, and Budding Rockstars was a one-day educational conference promoting tech entrepreneurship as a career path.
Cybersecurity and online safety projects
Tech.mt administers a range of projects for the sector and for the public. In cybersecurity, CybARverse, dated 2025, combines technology, teaching methods and organisation to qualify teaching staff according to a Periodic Table of Cybersecurity Training. Mind the Gap, from 2022, lets local e-commerce providers see how mature their cybersecurity is and then helps them to improve it.
BeSmartOnline! is the National Safer Internet Centre for Malta and is closely associated with safer technology use among children, educators, parents and guardians. The eBusiness Awards, also from 2022, promote the most innovative eBusiness initiatives and raise awareness of how web-based technologies can address social and economic concerns.
Community, language and culture projects
Several projects have a community focus. The Tech.mt free Wi-Fi project set up public internet access points in places frequented by the community, to encourage the use of the internet on portable devices away from home or the office desk. GetSmarter is a training programme that helps smartphone users to make better use of their devices, and ICT 4 the Elderly, funded by the European Union's Erasmus+ programme, helps older people to see how the internet can improve quality of life through online social interaction.
Women4IT is a partnership funded by the EEA Grants and the Norway Grants Fund for Youth Employment, supported by nine partners across Europe and implemented in Malta, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Spain. Digital Invasions, or DIGINV, promotes the exchange of good practice on involving citizens in caring for cultural heritage using new communication technologies. Dizzjunarju tal-Malti is an online Maltese dictionary that lets users search in both English and Maltese and suggest missing words, to keep the Maltese language alive in the digital world.
