Xrobb l-Għaġin is one of the quieter corners of south-east Malta: a nature park and sustainable development centre spread over more than 155,000 square metres of headland close to Marsaxlokk. From inside the park you can see across to the Delimara peninsula and the white cliffs of Munxar, and the setting is far removed from the island's busy resort strips.
On VisitMalta.co.uk the park appears in our directory of activity centres in Malta. This page explains what the park does, what groups and families can use, and how to get there.
A park built around sustainability
The project exists to teach, demonstrate and research sustainable ways of living, with the aim of promoting renewable energy, sensible wastewater management and the protection of wildlife. The buildings in the park were restored with energy conservation in mind, and electricity comes from wind turbines and photovoltaic panels on site, which also serve as a research area for renewable sources.
Water is treated as a resource. Rainwater is harvested and put to practical use, along with treated wastewater. The grounds protect existing garigue, steppe and endemic cliff habitats, and more than 15,000 indigenous trees and shrubs have been planted in degraded areas. Natural daylight and ventilation are used throughout the buildings. Anyone interested in the island's wildlife should know that the islands support over 4,000 insect species, hundreds of invertebrates and more than 200 vertebrates.
Education, camps and group days
Outdoor learning is the heart of the offer, with education for sustainable development across the curriculum for all ages. On site you will find a classroom for small children, equipped conference and classroom space, signed walking routes with interpretation, and lesson plans for organised day visits and overnight stays.
Programmes include daily environmental outings for school children, full-board overnight camps for pupils from Year 5 up to Form 5, plus weekend courses for youth organisations and adults. Foreign and local groups and families can arrange stays of a week or longer. Younger visitors may also enjoy Adventure Hub, another children's activity listing in our directory.
Walks, events and the wider south east
The public can walk within the park and visit the sustainable development centre, and the park organises guided walks in the south east of Malta. There are picnic areas and walking trails, and the paths are accessible to wheelchairs. Daily activities are arranged for groups, including older people and people with disabilities, and the park hosts environmental-themed children's parties and private functions. A conference hall seats 100 people, and catering and canteen facilities are available on site.
The park is run by Nature Trust Malta and has an on-site hostel that is mainly used by school and environmental groups. Accommodation is not covered on VisitMalta.co.uk, so for a place to stay, browse our hotels in Malta page or our where to stay in Malta guide.
Xrobb l-Għaġin Bay is a three-minute walk from the park, St Peter's Pool is about 20 minutes away on foot and Kalanka Bay about 30 minutes, while all three can also be reached by car or bike. For more swimming spots, see our guide to the best beaches in Malta.
Getting here and what to see nearby
By car, follow the road from Marsaxlokk, and when you reach the Tas-Silg church area take the road down towards the sea. The road splits in two, so take the left fork and continue to the park. Public transport is limited, and the final stretch is a countryside walk, so allow extra time. Our Malta weather guide will help you choose a comfortable month for walking.
The area has plenty to combine with a visit. The Blue Grotto is a short drive away, and the prehistoric sites at Ħal-Tarxien Prehistoric Complex and the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum are also in this part of the island. For more ideas, see things to do in Malta or our Three Cities guide. To ask about a visit, send a message through the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass it to the park.
