The Air Circuit Breaker, or ACB, is the primary safeguard for a vessel's main electrical distribution system. When a fault occurs on a switchboard, the ACB must react correctly, either tripping instantly to prevent damage cascading through the system, or holding under a downstream fault to allow a smaller breaker to clear it first. Electrical Marine Services carries out ACB and switchgear maintenance, testing and installation for yachts, superyachts and commercial vessels across Malta, working to the same rigour that classification societies expect from vessel electrical distribution equipment.
Marine circuit breakers are governed by IEC 60947, with Part 1 covering general rules for low voltage switchgear and Part 2 covering circuit breakers specifically, including utilisation categories and short circuit breaking capacity. Category A breakers have no intentional short time delay, while Category B breakers include an adjustable delay that allows downstream breakers to clear a fault before the upstream breaker operates, which is essential for maintaining selective coordination on a main switchboard. An ACB that has not been properly maintained may fail to trip during a genuine fault, or trip unexpectedly due to mechanical degradation, and both outcomes carry real safety and operational consequences on a vessel.
Routine ACB and switchgear service includes visual inspection for corrosion, dust and worn contact surfaces, insulation resistance testing, mechanical and electrical operation testing, and cleaning of main contacts, covers and arc shields. Where breakers have not been exercised regularly, mechanism lubrication and re-torqueing of connections is carried out as part of the same visit. For commercial vessels, this work is documented to a standard suitable for supporting classification society survey requirements, since properly recorded ACB maintenance is increasingly expected as part of maintaining class status.
Switchgear work connects directly to several other areas of the company's marine electrical scope. A generator supplying power into a faulty or poorly coordinated switchboard can present symptoms that look like a generator or AVR fault when the actual problem lies in the switchgear itself, which is why switchboard and breaker checks are frequently carried out alongside generator service. Where a vessel's automation system monitors or controls switchgear operation, for example through PLC based load sharing or synchronisation, switchgear testing is coordinated with the marine automation and control systems work covering those same panels.
Beyond ACBs specifically, the same power distribution service covers switchboards, moulded case circuit breakers, starters, transformers, variable frequency drives and 24V control circuits. Fault diagnosis and troubleshooting across a vessel's power distribution system frequently involves tracing a symptom back through several of these components rather than a single breaker, particularly where a starter or VFD fault presents as an apparent switchgear or generator problem. Attendance for switchgear and ACB work is available for private yachts and superyachts at Malta's marinas, and for commercial vessels alongside at Valletta and Marsaxlokk, at Malta Freeport, and at OPL when operationally required. Where a breaker or switchgear component needs replacement rather than repair, sourcing and fitting is coordinated as part of the same attendance wherever possible to minimise the time a vessel's main switchboard is out of full service.
