Modern vessels, from private yachts to commercial ships, rely heavily on automation to manage propulsion, auxiliary systems, alarms and generator synchronisation, and Electrical Marine Services builds, maintains and troubleshoots this automation for vessels across Malta. PLC based systems on a vessel typically monitor and control functions that would otherwise require constant manual attention: bilge pump automation, engine room alarms, tank level monitoring, and greywater and blackwater treatment systems among them. When one of these systems fails or behaves erratically, the fault can sit anywhere from a failed sensor, through wiring and terminal connections, to the PLC program logic itself. Troubleshooting starts with understanding what the system was designed to do, then working systematically through inputs, logic and outputs to find where the actual behaviour diverges from the intended behaviour.
Generator synchronisation and load sharing is one of the more demanding areas of marine automation, since it requires multiple generators to match frequency and phase before connecting to a common bus, then share load correctly once paralleled. A fault in synchronisation controls can prevent generators from paralleling safely, or cause uneven load sharing that overloads one machine while another runs under capacity. This work connects directly into the vessel's generator and alternator service and switchgear and ACB, since synchronisation and load sharing sit at the intersection of generation, protection and control.
Custom marine electrical control cabinets are built and installed where a vessel needs a bespoke automation or control solution rather than an off the shelf panel, whether that is for a specific propulsion control requirement, a purpose built alarm and monitoring panel, or an automatic control system for auxiliary equipment such as a greywater treatment plant. Cabinet builds follow proper marine wiring and labelling practice so that any future engineer, whether from Electrical Marine Services or elsewhere, can understand and maintain the system.
Navigation and instrumentation automation increasingly relies on standardised marine networking rather than isolated point to point wiring, and where a vessel's control systems need to share data with navigation electronics, this overlaps with NMEA and marine electronics integration. Attendance for automation and control system work is available across Malta's marinas, at Valletta and Marsaxlokk for commercial vessels, at Malta Freeport, and at OPL when operationally required.
