NMEA 2000 is a plug and play, multi master CAN bus based standard with no central network controller, meaning devices from different manufacturers can be mixed on the same backbone provided they are properly certified and correctly wired. In practice, integration work covers running and terminating the physical backbone cable correctly, addressing and configuring devices on the network, and resolving the conflicts that arise when equipment from multiple manufacturers needs to share data reliably. Typical devices integrated onto a vessel's NMEA 2000 network include GPS and GNSS receivers, chartplotters, depth sounders, wind and weather instruments, AIS transponders, autopilots and engine monitoring gateways.

Many vessels, particularly older yachts and commercial ships, still run legacy equipment on the earlier NMEA 0183 serial standard, which uses a slower one way data format transmitted over an RS-422 pair. NMEA 2000 supports integration of NMEA 0183 devices through low cost gateways, allowing older equipment such as a legacy autopilot or radio to share data with a modern NMEA 2000 network rather than being replaced outright, though the reverse is not possible since NMEA 2000 devices cannot be added directly to an NMEA 0183 network. Deciding which legacy equipment to gateway in and which to replace is part of the integration planning on any refit or upgrade project.

Electronics integration frequently overlaps with the vessel's wider automation and control systems, particularly where engine monitoring data needs to reach a PLC based alarm system, or where navigation instrumentation shares a display with automated propulsion or auxiliary controls. This work is coordinated with the company's marine automation and control systems service, and where new electronics are being installed as part of a wider project, with yacht electrical rewiring and refit work covering the cable runs and installation itself.
