BMIT is one of Malta's best known technology providers for business, running data centres, cloud platforms, cybersecurity services and managed IT from its base at SmartCity Malta in Kalkara. The parent company, BMIT Technologies plc, is listed on the Malta Stock Exchange, so it is a rare example of a Maltese IT company that investors can buy shares in.

For a UK reader, the simplest way to picture BMIT is as the firm that keeps the servers, networks and security of other companies running. Its customers include gaming operators, financial firms and large organisations, and our directory of IT companies in Malta lists it alongside other technology businesses on the island.

Who BMIT is and where it came from

BMIT Limited is a subsidiary of BMIT Technologies plc, a public company registered in Malta. It was formed when two organisations, BMIT Limited and Kinetix IT Solutions Limited, came together with the aim of delivering technology plainly and without unnecessary complexity. Today it serves hundreds of customers across online gaming, financial services, ICT, manufacturing, media, transport, retail and hospitality.

The group also took on a new line of business in 2024, when it acquired passive infrastructure that hosts mobile radio equipment. That operation is now branded TowerOps and is led by a dedicated officer, and it sits alongside the core data centre and managed IT business. Its method is to guide, manage and support a customer's technology, following a five-step process: audit and review, strategy and design, deployment, ongoing management and support, and regular reassessment.

The two Maltese data centres are linked to BMIT's locations in Italy and Germany by its own private international network, which also gives customers a direct route towards the Far East. That reach matters to gaming and finance firms whose users and regulators are spread across several countries.

Data centres and colocation

Colocation means renting space in someone else's secure data centre for your own servers, from a single server to racks or a whole locked cage. BMIT offers this from facilities at SmartCity Malta and Ħandaq in Malta, as well as in Milan and Frankfurt. The sites hold ISO 27001 and PCI-DSS certification, and BMIT has also achieved SOC 2 Type 1 attestation, which are recognised standards for information security and for handling card payment data.

Each room has controlled access, fire detection and suppression, precision air conditioning, independent power feeds and backup generator power. Staff monitor systems around the clock, and time synchronisation tools are available for clients who handle high-speed transactions and need precise records, plus tailored set-ups for online gaming, and the sites are linked by a private international network with Tier 1 connectivity, a 99.95 per cent uptime commitment and routes across five submarine cables. Personalised hosting adds dedicated servers, disaster recovery, private clouds on Windows and Linux systems, and infrastructure for AI workloads.

Cloud and hybrid IT

BMIT deployed Malta's first public cloud services platform, hosted in its Maltese facilities so that customers with strict compliance needs can keep data on the island. Customers can combine public, private and hybrid cloud, with services run at their own premises, in a BMIT data centre or alongside the big cloud providers. BMIT is a Microsoft cloud services provider, and its MultiCloud Connect service gives a private, dedicated link between a customer's systems and platforms such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.

It also holds the HPE Hybrid Cloud Platinum partner status and the HPE Aruba Networking Silver specialisation. Managed services cover system administration, infrastructure and database management, while technical advisers help companies decide what to host where. Customers who want to start small can use self-service servers available on demand, and flexible payment plans are offered to keep overall costs down.

Cybersecurity and compliance

BMIT treats security and governance as two halves of one job. Its cybersecurity services include threat and vulnerability management, a virtual chief information security officer for firms without a full-time security lead, managed detection and response with analysts watching systems, and awareness assessments. It also supplies endpoint and cloud protection, managed firewalls, DDoS protection, identity and access management, and email and web filtering against phishing and malware.

For regulated firms there is help with hosting compliance, IT governance and the European Union's Digital Operational Resilience Act, known as DORA, which sets resilience rules for financial entities. Backup services, disaster recovery and business continuity planning are offered for companies that must retain data and recover quickly after an outage.

How the solutions fit together

BMIT presents its offer as a series of rings around data. Data sits at the centre, because every decision about technology should start from how information is stored and protected. Around it come hybrid IT, which balances in-house systems with cloud, then digital work, covering Microsoft 365, Teams, virtual desktops and AI tools for remote working.

Next come cybersecurity and governance, and resilience building, which is about preparing an organisation to withstand and recover from disruption. The outer ring is managed services, where BMIT takes on day to day running of IT for companies with no internal IT team, so that managers can concentrate on their own business.

Networks, productivity and automation

On connectivity, BMIT provides managed networks, managed SD-WAN, wired and wireless office networks, load balancing and private links between customer sites. For day to day work, its productivity team handles Microsoft 365 licensing, migration to Microsoft 365, hybrid workplace advice and managed backup of Microsoft 365 data.

It also sells an AI-powered Virtual Agent that answers customer queries in several languages at any hour, used for customer support, onboarding and anti-money laundering checks. It is aimed mainly at gaming and financial firms, and ties in with our iGaming in Malta guide and our overview of financial services in Malta.

Who BMIT works with

BMIT organises its offer around five groups: financial services, large businesses, gaming, professionals and small businesses. Banks, insurers, fintechs, advisers and stockbrokers need stringent data management and a move away from legacy systems, which is where its hosting, backup and continuity work fits. For these firms BMIT can help define and run business continuity and disaster recovery, keep backups that meet data retention rules, and plan a hybrid set-up with geographic redundancy or multi-cloud for particular workloads. If you are setting up an operation on the island, CLA Malta can help with company formation, while our Malta corporate tax structure page explains how companies are taxed, and BMIT can then host and secure the systems.
