A firm with half a century of history

The story begins in 1967, when Alfred Calamatta joined the firm Brewin, Edwards & Scrutton, and the firm itself looks back to 1971 as the year it began pioneering Maltese financial services. In 1972 he founded A. Calamatta & Partners, and in 1992 Alex Cuschieri joined him as a partner, the same year the Malta Stock Exchange opened. Alex Cuschieri later presented a popular radio programme on personal finance. The business acted as joint sponsoring stockbroker in the public offering of Maltacom in 1998 and opened offices in Valletta in 1999. It merged its stockbroking company into Calamatta Cuschieri & Co Ltd in 2003, and in 2006 invested in a new IT platform. introduced and listed an income funds range in 2003, launched a fund services arm in 2009, a web trading service in 2011 and its own research arm in 2013, with mobile trading following in 2015.

More recent milestones include branches in Sliema and Fgura in 2015, the acquisition of Crystal Finance Investments in 2016, when headcount reached 100, a new head office in 2017 and the Mosta branch in 2018, the same year it introduced 24 hour customer support. UBS appointed the firm as its representative for UBS funds in Malta in 2017, the group bought Financial Planning Services Ltd in 2019, and in 2020 it gained ISO 9001 certification for customer service. Today the firm has more than 30,000 clients and assets under management of about 2 billion euros. For financial businesses choosing Malta as a base, the island offers English-speaking staff, a sound legal framework and EU passport rights, themes covered in our guide to Malta's corporate tax structure. The board comprises Alex Cuschieri as chairman, Alan Cuschieri and Nick Calamatta as group co-chief executives and Michael Galea as group chief operating officer.

Investments, trading and wealth management

The core business is investment services. Clients can buy funds, bonds and fixed income, equities, exchange traded funds and commodities, with free specialised research written by the in-house team and dedicated financial advisers. Orders can be placed through an adviser by phone, email or in person, and there is also an online trading platform. The published advisory rates for equities start from 0.70 per cent, with a typical charge of EUR 30 per trade for smaller trades, though third-party charges can apply to manual orders.

The group also runs UCITS funds under the CC Funds name and full service fund administration, and publishes local market data, market commentary, research and educational material for investors. Existing investors can transfer holdings to the firm, and a wealth management service tailors a mix of products to individual goals. Capital markets specialists help local companies raise money through bond issues and listings, and the firm regularly publishes news on Maltese government stocks and company bonds. If you are weighing up the wider market first, our overview of financial services in Malta is a good starting point.

Pensions, savings and protection

Retirement planning is a major line. The firm offers private pension schemes and occupational pension schemes, plus a retirement calculator on its website. People living in Malta, or planning to, can read how pensions and tax interact in our guide to Malta tax for UK nationals and our UK guide to relocating to Malta. Check any scheme's suitability with a qualified adviser.

For everyday savers there is a Monthly Investment Plan, in which regular deposits are invested, interest and dividends are reinvested automatically before tax, and extra lump sums can be added at any time. Progress can be tracked online through Moneybase, the group's digital platform, which has added features such as weekly cashback on card spending and a connection to the Xero accounting package, and the website offers savings calculators, a goal planner and a budgeting template. Life insurance, whole of life cover and loan protection are also available through the firm's registration as a tied insurance intermediary, and for independent cover you can compare AIB Insurance Brokers.

Moneybase and everyday tools

Moneybase is the digital side of the group, an award winning platform where clients log in to view investments and savings. The website also provides a monthly investment calculator, a goal planner, a budget planner and a retirement calculator, together with guides on how to save, set goals and plan a budget. A knowledge base, Help Centre and market education section explain terms for first-time investors, which helps newcomers who have only used UK products such as ISAs and workplace pensions.

Business owners are served too. The capital markets team helps companies grow by raising funds from investors, and its completed projects archive lists bond issues and other transactions it has handled. Business loan protection and loan protection plans sit alongside whole of life cover, and the group publishes company news, local market news and investor relations information for those who want to follow it.
