The Faculty of Dental Surgery is the dental school of the University of Malta, set on the main campus at Msida. It is a teaching and research faculty rather than a high-street practice, so it will interest prospective students, international applicants and anyone curious about how dentists are trained on the island. It is listed in our directory of dentists in Malta.
Studying dental surgery in Malta
The faculty's page invites applicants to study with it and lets you choose between full-time and part-time modes, then browse courses by level. Sections cover its departments, research, staff, student resources and a calendar, and there is a link to prospectuses for undergraduate and postgraduate study. The wider university offers a doctoral school, foundation studies and admissions advice on dates, deadlines, fees and funding.
The language of instruction at the University of Malta is English, which suits UK applicants. For practical planning, including visas, housing and the cost of living, see our relocation guide for UK arrivals.
Clinics and the mobile dental clinic
Alongside teaching, the faculty has a section for its clinics and a mobile dental clinic. Because the faculty page gives no further detail on treatments, who may attend or how appointments work, use the enquiry form to ask the faculty directly. Patients who simply want a private dentist can compare practices such as Apex Dental in our directory.
Nothing on this page is medical advice. The faculty page lists staff, departments and research areas, so prospective students can see who teaches before they apply, and a calendar shows key dates in the academic year. Ask the faculty or a qualified dentist about any treatment question.
Campus services and student support
Students at the University of Malta have access to a library, a virtual learning environment, IT support, a help hub, and a health and wellness centre. The campus also has child educare services, a resource centre and the University of the Third Age, and the university runs an international student English test and a junior college.
The university is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion, with an Equity Office and committees covering disability access, gender and sexual diversity, and race and ethnic affairs. Its quality assurance structures include a committee set up in 2015 and a support unit, and sustainability has been part of a pro-rector's portfolio since 2023. International applicants, including those from the UK, can find admissions guidance, key dates and fee information on the university site.
The university behind the faculty
The University of Malta traces its origins to the Collegium Melitense, founded in 1592, and formal medical teaching to 1676, when a lecturer in anatomy and surgery was appointed at the Knights' hospital in Valletta. A Medical College was set up in 1771. To learn more about the order that ran that hospital, read our Knights of Malta history.
The university is governed under the Education Act by a Council and a Senate, while each faculty board directs that faculty's teaching and research, including the Faculty of Dental Surgery. It is led by a Rector, Professor Frank Bezzina, and has a Chancellor, Professor David J. Attard. The British period brought the university's rules into line with universities in the United Kingdom, a link that still shows in its structures today. Today the university has fourteen faculties, interdisciplinary institutes and centres, three schools and a junior college. Besides Msida there are campuses in Valletta, Marsaxlokk and Gozo, and well over 3,500 students graduate each year. Its strategic plan for 2026 to 2030 was launched in January 2026. Visitors to the capital can combine a trip with our Valletta guide.
