FreightZone Malta

FreightZone (Malta) Logistics Ltd is a freight forwarder in Birżebbuġa, on the south-east coast of Malta. It arranges the movement of cargo by air, sea and road for importers and exporters, for individuals as well as companies, and it is unusual among Maltese forwarders in running its own office in China.

History and network

FreightZone started in 2000 as an expansion of the freight logistics business of Cargo Services Malta, which has operated since 1989. It has grown into one of the island's established forwarders, with services for Maltese trade and for cross trades between other countries.

The company belongs to several international networks: World Cargo Alliance, China Global Logistics Network, Allworld Shipping, ZieglerOne and JCTrans. Membership gives it partner offices around the world and supports door-to-door delivery, port-to-port services, air freight consolidation, direct IATA services through major carriers, full container load rate negotiation and consolidated less-than-container loads. Air, ocean and project cargo

The main services are air freight, ocean freight and transhipment, supported by door deliveries and customs clearance. Specialist lines include aviation and aircraft parts, vessel spare parts and supplies, and project cargo and event logistics. The portfolio shows what this means in practice. In one case the team coordinated aircraft engines from Malta to Chile: the engines were too large for the air services calling at Malta, so they travelled by truck to Milan and then by sea to their destination. Another project coordinated the transport and delivery of equipment for the extension of a bottling plant in Malta, from container clearance to the road movement of out-of-gauge machinery. A recurring job is supplying ships that are drydocking and refitting at Maltese shipyards, sourcing spares and documents from around the world.

China office and warehousing

For the past three years FreightZone has operated from an office in Ningbo, the largest port in China. Led by Managing Director John Zerafa, who has been a pioneer in logistics between China and Malta, it supports clients with contract manufacturing, quality control, sourcing, transport procurement and cross trading. The company also runs seminars and networking sessions on European business for manufacturers in Zhejiang province.

In Europe the company offers warehousing and consolidation for air freight, LCL and full loads, for Malta-bound cargo or other destinations. Logistics services include receiving and storing goods, re-packing, shrink-wrapping, palletising, online tracking, 3PL and 4PL services and turnkey project management.
