Golf Academy Malta is the coaching arm of golf on the island's best-known course, the Royal Malta Golf Club in Marsa, a short drive from Valletta. It teaches golfers of every age and skill level, from first-timers who want a one-hour taster to competitive juniors and visiting players who want to sharpen their game on holiday.
The academy takes a holistic approach to the game and aims to provide competent coaching while keeping golf fun. It operates alongside the Marsa Sports Club, and is listed in our directory of golf in Malta.
History and coach
The academy grew from a visit in the autumn of 1992 by Henning Schulze-Doering, who came to Malta to coach clients from northern Europe and found a safe, English-speaking country with an ideal climate for golf. He has been Head Golf Professional at the Royal Malta Golf Club since 2001, and the academy has now served all age groups for more than thirty years, making it the longest established golf academy in the Mediterranean.
Henning holds a Master of Science degree in sports coaching and co-founded the PGA of Malta, which became fully recognised by the PGA of Europe in 1998. He has chaired it since 2000, led Malta's national team to a silver medal at the 2015 Games of the Small States of Europe in Iceland, and was part of the team at the Mediterranean Games in Spain in 2018. In 2020 he was nominated for the CPG golf professional award.
Lessons, juniors and fitting
The academy provides golf coaching for all levels, junior coaching, group coaching, club custom fitting and sales, company days and clinics, and golf travel. It runs a junior academy of more than 100 young golfers, a Women in Golf programme and coaching for Special Olympics athletes. Alumni have gone on to golf scholarships at leading universities.
For UK visitors, a lesson is a good way to get more from a golfing break, and the custom fitting service helps if you want clubs matched to your swing. Private lessons are arranged by enquiry.
Group coaching suits friends travelling together, who can share a lesson and a lively mini-competition, and the junior programme is open to families who live on the island year round. Malta is an English-speaking country, which the founder found one of its attractions from the start.
Corporate days and group clinics
The academy designs golf team-building events for companies. There are four formats. A 60-minute introduction costs 35 euros per person, a 150-minute session with mini-competitions costs 60 euros, and a full day of 240 minutes including a break costs 90 euros. Each is open to groups of between four and forty and includes fees, equipment, practice balls and VAT. A driving range competition from 40 euros per person adds a hole-in-one contest, chipping and putting games and Doppler radar tracking, for groups of ten to fifty.
Sessions start with a meet and greet with the instructor at the Royal Malta Golf Club and cover putting, chipping and full swings at the driving range. Meeting rooms, drinks and snacks can be arranged, and the venue has two catering outlets.
Planning your visit
The academy is open from early morning, which helps in summer heat, and the Malta weather guide shows the best months to play. If you are combining golf with sightseeing, see our things to do in Malta page and hotels in Valletta, which is close to Marsa. A car makes getting to the course simple, and Baron Car Hire is one local firm in our directory.
To book a lesson, a clinic or a company day, use the VisitMalta.co.uk enquiry form on this page and we will pass your message to Golf Academy Malta, who will reply to you directly.
