Gozo Freedivers is a freediving and spearfishing centre on Gozo, the quieter sister island to the north of Malta. Freediving means diving on a single breath with no scuba tank, and the centre offers beginner courses, coaching for certified divers, spearfishing sessions, retreats and a guesthouse stay, all run by instructors Luke and Benji from the village of In-Nadur. It is listed in our directory of dive centres in Malta, and you can contact the team through the enquiry form on this page.
Who runs it and how they teach
The centre took its current name in 2026, but the people behind it have been in the water for much longer. Luke, a Maltese freediver who grew up spearfishing from the family boat, helped found the Malta Freediving Club in 2010 as a volunteer organisation and is still its president. He later co-founded one of the first dedicated freediving centres in the islands with former world champion Jesper Stechmann, and in 2017 helped to organise Malta's first freediving competition, where he won gold in Free Immersion and set a national record of 42 metres.
Benji first came to Luke as a student around 2020. A former competitive swimmer who worked in accounting, he trained as an instructor and moved to freediving full time in early 2026. Between them they favour a relaxed, ego-free style: sessions are planned around sea conditions, buddy procedures and personal limits, depth follows ease rather than force, and mindfulness runs through the yoga, breathing and meditation work that sits alongside the diving.
Freediving courses and coaching
Newcomers can start with a Discover Freediving session or a Level 1 course. No experience is needed, only comfort in the water, and the session is designed to show you what freediving feels like before you commit to anything more. Divers who are already certified can train around the buoy, rebuild confidence after a break, work with a coach on depth, or plan an adventure dive with local support.
Gozo's coast offers wrecks, walls and clear water, and the instructors guide dives around Gozo and Comino. If you are weighing up a boat day to Comino, our guide to the Blue Lagoon covers the island above the surface. Anyone comparing options on the island can also look at nearby operators such as Blue Hole Diving Gozo and Apnea Total.
Spearfishing, retreats and meditation
Spearfishing at the centre is taught as a calm, respectful and skill-based activity rooted in patience and local knowledge. The approach is selective and sustainable, and it suits freedivers who want to combine their breath-hold training with fishing. Crossover sessions are available for certified freedivers who want to try it.
Retreats can be built around meditation, spearfishing, sailing or a private group. Luke also offers meditation sessions, and dates for sessions and upcoming retreats are announced on the centre's Instagram account as they are confirmed. A journal on the centre's site collects short pieces on breath, stillness and sustainable spearfishing for anyone who wants a feel for the philosophy first.
Staying with the centre in Gozo
The centre runs a guesthouse for people who want to join its slower rhythm: sleep, stretch, dive and share meals. You do not need to book a course to stay, so it works equally well for a freediving holiday, a retreat or simply a base on the island. Our Gozo guide and listing of hotels in Gozo help if you would like to compare other places to stay.
The centre is easy to reach from Victoria and both ferry harbours, and the exact meeting place is shared once a booking is confirmed. UK visitors can plan the journey with our guide to flights to Malta, then cross by ferry to Gozo.
