I+A is an architectural design management studio based in Tarxien, a town in the south-east of Malta close to Paola. Its range covers architecture, interiors, objects and the public life of design. It was established in 2018 and carries the tagline Beautifully Made. You will find it in our directories of architects in Malta and interior designers in Malta.
The studio puts a priority on coordination, technical clarity and the structured delivery of work that is buildable, compliant and carefully managed. For a UK client, that means a practice that sees a project through from concept drawings to a finished space and is used to coordinating consultants and contractors.
The directors and the team
Five founding directors lead the practice. William Bondin and François Mangion are perits, the Maltese title for architects, and they steer architectural and technical direction and architectural design development. Dimitri Calleja coordinates structural and engineering work, Christian Camilleri oversees digital development and project information, and Joeaby Vassallo manages administration, communications and finances.
They are supported by a senior designer who leads interior design projects and two draughtspersons who prepare technical documentation for planning, design and construction. The photographs on this page show the team at work around a desk, in meetings and collecting an award.
Homes and interiors
Interior design for private clients is a large part of the portfolio. Projects include a townhouse interior in Mellieħa, a town house in Rabat, a terraced house in Mosta and an apartment in San Lawrenz on Gozo. The rendered images on this page show the studio's taste: arched alcoves, warm timber, soft greens and blues, patterned cement tiles and landscaped roof terraces.
If you own or are buying in these areas, our Mellieħa guide, Mdina and Rabat guide and Gozo guide give a feel for the surroundings. Our Malta weather guide is a useful companion when choosing shading, terraces and finishes.
Historic buildings and public spaces
One of the studio's most distinctive schemes is Synthetic Palazzo in St Julian's. It reconfigures a traditional double-fronted townhouse of the Sliema and St Julian's type by stripping back later additions, preserving the high-ceilinged piano nobile and adding a detached new volume in the garden, linked by a lightweight bridge. The new building uses precisely made prefabricated reconstituted stone blocks, and the project reuses historic reservoirs and shelters below ground.
The studio has also designed the food court at Malta International Airport, completed in 2022. Set below ground, it combines food outlets, lounges and workstations around a central bar, and uses passive and active systems for lighting and ventilation. Travellers on our flights to Malta routes may well pass through it.
Public art, objects and design advocacy
Alongside buildings, the studio designs and builds monumental artworks. Qalb ix-Xewk, completed in 2024 in Independence Garden in Sliema, is a steel and LED installation with a transparent core, and N(h)ar, completed in 2021 in Santa Luċija, is a sculpture of steel pillars inspired by fire and rising hot air. The studio also worked on the Sema artwork for the Marsa junction.
Objects are a growing line. Weavature is a chair that reimagines Maltese weaving, and a 3D-printed lounge chair made from recycled plastic was unveiled in 2025 with a partner company. The practice also runs a design talk series and has supported the Emanuele Luigi Galizia Awards, as part of its advocacy work.
