Malta Squash Association is the national governing body for squash in Malta and Gozo. Its mission is to grow the sport at every level, from first-time players trying the game to elite athletes competing internationally. It organises the country's squash activity, including the Malta National League, with several divisions open to players of all ages and abilities, and a year-round programme of tournaments headed by the Malta Squash International Open.
For UK players, squash is one of the easiest sports to keep up on the island. Visitors can book courts at hotels and leisure clubs, residents can join the league, and coaches are available for beginners and improvers. The association is listed in our directory of sports clubs in Malta.
Membership and the National League
Membership is offered in two categories: junior, for under 19s and full-time students, and adult, for players aged 19 and over. Memberships run on a calendar year from January to December, and new members can join for the full year or from July to December. Existing members can renew from December to March. Prices are shown on the association's membership pages and are not repeated here because they vary by joining period.
Junior benefits include a discount on tournament entry, registration with the World Squash Federation SPIN system, discounts at selected courts and the right to play at the Malta Union Club. Adult members can also play in the Malta National Squash Championships and the National League, receive discounts at Cynergi and Sunny Coast, buy a day pass at LivingWell at a special rate, and play league matches against club members at the Marsa Sports Club and the Malta Union Club.
The association's figures show the scale of the scene: 24 squash courts across the islands, 95 players in the National League and about 30 tournaments and events a year. The league is open to everyone from beginners to top players.
Where to play
The association lists squash courts at nine venues in Malta and Gozo: Cynergi Health and Fitness, the Malta Union Club in Sliema, the National Pool Complex, LivingWell Malta, the Marsa Sports Club, the Malta Marriott Hotel and Spa, Sunny Coast Leisure Club, the Gozo Sports Complex and Qawra Palace Resort and Spa. Only Malta Squash members can also play at the Malta Union Club, and the Marsa Sports Club courts are for club members.
Printed prices give a feel for costs. At Cynergi, a court costs €10 per hour off-peak or €14 at peak times, with member rates of €5 and €10. At the National Pool Complex a court is €3.17 per hour, at the Malta Marriott it is €9 per court hour or €6.75 for members, and at the Gozo Sports Complex it is €4 for a court. Some venues charge per person: Sunny Coast is €3 per hour, or €2.50 for members, and Qawra Palace is €5 per hour. Members' special prices require both players to be members, and interactive squash technology adds a €7 supplement per hour at venues that use it.
Two of the venues are hotels, the Malta Marriott and Qawra Palace. Our guides to hotels in Sliema and St Julian's, hotels in Qawra and St Paul's Bay and hotels in Gozo help you pick a base near a court, and the Gozo guide covers the sister island.
Coaches
Qualified, affiliated coaches are available to anyone who would like to take up squash or sharpen their game, and junior coaching runs at several clubs. Ivan Balzan holds a European Squash Federation Level 2 certificate and coaches at LivingWell in St Julian's. Robert Sultana, Level 1, coaches at the Tal-Qroqq Sports Complex, the Marsa Sports Club and the Malta Union Club. Liz Said, Level 2, coaches at the Malta Union Club, and Mark Lupi, Level 1, coaches at Cynergi and Tal-Qroqq. Niall Engerer holds an England Squash Level 2 qualification and coaches at all venues, which is helpful for UK players used to English standards.
